City of Wadsworth, Ohio company history timeline

1814

1814 – First religious service is conducted in July.

Founded in 1814 on land owned by the Connecticut Western Reserve, Wadsworth held the distinction of being the farthermost southern edge of the enormous land holding which Connecticut was permitted to keep while other states ceded their lands to the federal government.

1815

1815 – More Pennsylvania Dutch come to Wadsworth in larger numbers.

1817

1817 – Doctor John Smith was the first physician in Wadsworth, on Stony Ridge Road (Reimer Road).

1817 – Owen Brown gave 11 acres to start Woodlawn Cemetery when his child died.

1818

1818 – The South School was built on the East-West Road opposite what is now Hartman Road.

1819

1819 – A larger North School was built a mile north of the South School for increased enrollment.

1823

1823 – The Farmer’s Library was formed with more books than in the Brown collection.

1826

1826 – Allen and John Pardee build the first store on East-West Road near what is now Fairlawn Ave.

1830

1830 – Allen Pardee built the National Hotel north of East Park.

For the first fifteen years or so, the Yankees enjoyed singularity, but in the 1830's, a new breed of people began arriving in Wadsworth from Pennsylvania, a people who referred to themselves as Pennsylvania Dutch.

1839

1839 – Sarah (Cettie) Spelman, J. D. Rockefeller’s wife, was born in Wadsworth.

1880

1880 – Rising Mount Zion Church (now First Baptist) was built on what is now Mill Street.

1881

1881 – Wadsworth Union School (high school) was built.

1884

1884 – Aaron Pardee became the first mayor of the village.

1885

1885 – The Congregationalists left Wadsworth.

1890

1890 – Four factories were formed: Match, Injector, Boxboard and Wadsworth Salt.

1910

1910 – A Scarlet Fever epidemic hit Wadsworth.

1916

1916 – The new Lutheran Church was built.

1917

1917 – Wadsworth mobilized Company G to fight in World War I.

1919

1919 – The Red Cross had a big celebration for returning soldiers on July 4.

1963

1963 – Land was purchased for the new hospital from the Koontz family on old Route 57.

1976

1976 – A new gazebo was built to replace the stone one on the square. (Nation’s 200th anniversary)

2000

2000 – Lincoln and Franklin Schools replaced with new ones.

2014

2014 – Wadsworth celebrates its 200th birthday.
