Watsonville Fire company history timeline
In the 1850's, the Santa Cruz downtown started seeing a growth in commercial type buildings; boarding houses, shops, restaurants, drug stores, tanneries, etc.
In 1857, the Santa Cruz citizens organized a volunteer fire department and purchased a hand drawn hook and ladder.
WATSONVILLE >> Known for its fertile soil farmed for generations by waves of immigrant communities, the small Central Coast city of Watsonville is readying to celebrate 150 years since its incorporation on March 30, 1868.
In 1878, a fire bell was purchased to alert all volunteers of a fire.
Starting in 1881, a competition began between the volunteer departments located in Watsonville and Santa Cruz, (approximately ten companies all totaled). The annual competition was held in various locations in the area including Watsonville, Santa Cruz, San Jose and Hollister.
The Alerts won the State Championship held in San Jose in June 1882, winning $1500 in coin.
The last competition occurred in May of 1886 and won by the Pajaro hose company.
Also during 1887, the Santa Cruz House was destroyed by fire.
On April 14, 1894, a fire began on Pacific Avenue and when it was through, it had destroyed a City block between Front Street and Pacific Avenue, and from Cooper Street to the Flatiron Building.
In 1949 the fire department bought its first aerial ladder truck, for a cost of $28,650, a mandatory piece of equipment for above ground level firefighting.

25 years ago on May 14, 1996 The program “Home Independent Study” is open in the PV School District at Alianza Elementary School.
The project was made possible due to the 1998 passage of Measure G, a $7 million bond measure that raised annual property taxes for city residents $9 per $100,000 of assessed valuation for 30 years.
