With help from Jordan and his brothers, other families, and their indentured servants, the fort was completed in 1811.
Prior to Illinois becoming a state in 1818, the territory that is now Franklin County was at one time part of the State of Virginia; Knox County, Indiana; and St Clair, Randolph, Gallatin, White, and Jackson Counties in Illinois.
In 1818, the territorial legislature created three new counties in an effort to meet requirement for admission to statehood.
By 1820 Frankfort alone had a population of 1,763.
Late in 1821 the county seat was moved to Garrett's tavern as a permanent location on top of Frankfort Hill.
The first courthouse in Benton was built in 1841, and it burned two years later.
The current courthouse was built in 1875 at a cost of $25,000.xix The courthouse is constructed of bricks that were made in the “Boneyard Woods” area of Benton, and the stone came from the northwest edge of Benton.xx County offices moved into the building on September 2, 1875.xxi
In 1894, a railroad track making its way through Chicago, Paducah, and Memphis was laid through Franklin County four miles from Frankfort.
It was April 10, 1906 when the incorporation papers were signed and West Frankfort became an official city.
By 1927 West Frankfort's population reached 19,896.
A post office was maintained in Frankfort Heights until its destruction by fire in 2005, making West Frankfort one of the smallest cities in the United States to have two ZIP codes.
