City of Wilmington IL history

Archibald McIntyre was the first merchant in the village, having come here in 1837.

The first school in Wilmington was a private one, and was started in 1838, but three years later a public school was established, and soon after a small school building was erected.

John D. Henderson, a native of New York, came to Wilmington in 1848, and he, in company with Doctor Bowen, opened a store there.

In 1854, when the first election was held to form a village, but sixty-three votes were cast, and that too at an election when every voter must have felt a deep interest.
