City of Winona company history timeline
Founded in 1858 as a normal (teacher-training) school, it was the first American institution of its kind west of the Mississippi River.
Instruction began in 1860.
In 1862, the Winona & St Peter Railroad, now known as the DM&E, was completed.
The city served as a supply point for westbound settlers, and its early growth as a river port and wheat-shipping, lumbering, and flour-milling centre was boosted by the construction of the railroad in 1862.
Winona, the largest town in Shannon County, was incorporated as a fourth class city in 1888 and Mr.
Fire destroyed several stores along First Street in 1891, but most were rebuilt.
In April of 1895, Pike Creek flooded the area and drowned one person and on July 4, 1895, a disastrous flood struck without warning drowning eleven people and it washed away or severely damaged the entire business section.
By 1895, both Fishertown and Winona were bustling communities with a population of 1,000 to 1,200 people.
By the first part of the 1900's the Ozark Land and Lumber Company had sold its interests to H. H. Hahn, who continued to mill productively for a few years.
After 1900 timber and wheat operations declined, and diversified industries arose.
As Winona entered the 20th century, the population leveled off due to the lumber mills closing, but commerce continued to thrive. It was clear that Winona needed a chamber of commerce, so the Winona Merchant’s and Business Men’s Association and the Winona Board of Trade combined in 1912 to form the Winona Association of Commerce.
In the 1940's Winona's population had dropped under 500.
