The North wing of the top floor of the courthouse was also a Reading Room until 1855 when the Women’s Christian Temperance Union disbanded.
In the years around the middle of the 1870’s Winterset had 18 lawyers, 16 doctors, 4 hotels, 16 churches and 2,400 residents.
In 1877, a tannery was built in an area south of the then-20 acre City Park.
Rooms again had to be secured in 1889 as the number of books kept growing.
Carnegie and an answer dated February 11, 1904 came to the Library Board of Trustees.
Construction of the library began in 1904.
The library opened on June 16, 1905.
John Wayne, was born on May 26, 1907.
In 1909, when Wayne was 28 months old, his father left his job at Smith’s Drug Store in Winterset.
But it was a short stay, only five months; when he heard that an Earlham pharmacy was for sale he managed to secure funds for a down payment and took it over in 1910.
By December 1911, he was forced to declare bankruptcy of the Earlham store.
Clyde managed to land a position at a Keokuk drug store and lived there for part of 1912, taking his son with him to live in an apartment above the store.

Years later, research revealed that the Morrison’s home had caught fire in 1914, causing considerable damage to the house located on Jackson Street.
Lincoln Township began contracting for use of the libary in 1916.
The Estate of Martha Crawford gave the library a carrara marble statue and base in 1943.
In a letter that he wrote to me in 1962, Wayne recalled his last stop in Iowa.
Representatives of the library drove to Mason City in October of 1978 to meet with the trustees of the Kinney-Lindstrom Foundation and ask for financial help.
In 1991, the Library Board placed a bronze plaque near the North entrance.
In 2015, while visiting family, Ohio natives Geronimo and Reed fell in love with Winterset’s small-town feel.

In April of 2020 it was relocated to the north side of the square in Winterset, near the Chamber of Commerce & Welcome Center and across from the historic Madison County Courthouse.
