1850

The first national convention of women advocating women’s suffrage was held in Worcester on October 23 and 24, 1850.

1854

In 1854, Elm Park was the first purchase of land, with tax-levy funds, for a public park in the United States.

1855

Worcester resident Joshua Stoddard invented the steam calliope in 1855.

1880

J. Lee Richmond of the Worcesters pitched the first perfect game in major league baseball history on June 12, 1880.

1895

Worcester resident Henry Perky became the first to mass produce shredded wheat in the United States in 1895.

1902

Albert A. Michelson, later chairman of Clark University’s Physics Department, is named America’s first Nobel Prize Winner in 1902.

1907

Sidbury Gate was the chief entrance from the south, protected by the formidable earthwork called Fort Royal, the remains of which still exist, and was similar to St Martin's Gate except that the flanking bastions were circular; the foundations of the northern were uncovered in 1907.

1914

Doctor Robert H. Goddard of Clark University patented the first liquid fuel rocket in 1914.

1926

In 1926 rocketry pioneer Robert H. Goddard, a professor at Clark University, fired his first liquid fuel rocket in nearby Auburn.

1950

Worcester transitioned from a Strong Mayor system to City Manager in 1950.

The City's first City Manager was Everett Merrill in 1950.

1982

The first female Mayor of Worcester was Sara Robertson in 1982.

1987

The Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park opened in 1987 and accommodates research facilities for numerous companies.
