What We're Looking for The City of Beverly Hills Police Department is seeking highly motivated and qualified candidates for the position of Lateral Police Officer. The lateral Police Officer perform duties to protect life and property within the city. Maintains law and order and respond to emergency calls. May patrol the city enforcing the criminal and traffic laws of the city, state and nation. Performs background investigations, or perform training duties. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the full working class in law enforcement. Incumbents appointed to this class will have related work experience and will possess law enforcement training. Initially, incumbents will be assigned to patrol and work under close supervision, performing the more routine duties assigned to positions in this class. However, as experience is gained, incumbents are expected to perform the full range of duties as assigned with increasing independence. Special assignments in police-related functions (within or outside of patrol) may be available to experienced incumbents, depending on the needs of the department. Appointment to a special assignment is at the discretion of the Police Chief. Prepare a variety of reports including those on shift activities, operations, crime and incidents, arrests made, and unusual incidents observed; prepare investigative reports and log case update information. Testify in juvenile, civil, traffic, municipal, and criminal courts, and parole and DMV hearings; prepare and present evidence; respond to mandatory court calls during irregular hours. Assume responsibility for the care and custody of detained adults and juveniles, assist in receiving, searching, booking, fingerprinting, and transporting inmates. Conduct property and building checks for burglary and other criminal activity. Administer CPR, NARCAN, and first aid in cases of medical emergencies. Conduct chemical, drug, and alcohol testing of persons for impairment. Respond to questions, concerns, and requests for service from the general public; answer questions from the public concerning local and state laws, procedures, and activities of the department; provide information as appropriate and resolve complaints. Develop and maintain positive relations with residents, business owners, schools, and other members of the community; conduct community outreach and attend public meetings, events, and functions to build trust and strengthen relations; and work collaboratively with the community to address community concerns. Stay abreast of changes in the Department's Policy and Procedures Manual; assure performance of assigned duties reflect adherence to the Manual. Participate in continuous training to develop, maintain, and enhance law enforcement skills and maintain required certificates. Depending on departmental needs, may serve in a special assignment. Examples of special assignments include, but are not limited to the following: Motor Officer, Detective, School Resource Officer, Canine Handler, Traffic Officer, Community Relations Officer, Field Training Officer, etc. Perform related duties as assigned. Experience and Training: Experience specified in one of the tracks listed below: Track 1: Graduation from an accredited California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) academy and currently employed in good standing with a California law enforcement agency as a sworn police officer. Ability to: Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical malfunctions in vehicles, motorcycles, and equipment; communicate clearly both orally and in writing; use mechanics hand tools and diagnostic equipment; read, interpret and comprehend various technical manuals and other related materials; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Note: Must provide own basic mechanic hand tools. License/Certification: Candidates must be in possession of a valid Class "C" California Driver's License. The following licenses/certificate must be obtained within 12 months of employment. * Possession of a valid Class "A" California Driver's License within twelve (12) months of appointment. Tanker and/or Hazmat endorsement(s) highly desirable. * At least two (2) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in the area of Automotive or Medium/Heavy Truck within twelve (12) months of appointment. The following license/certificate are highly desirable. * ASE Masters certification in Automobile and/or Medium/Heavy Truck highly desirable. * Possession of an Emergency Vehicle Technician certification highly desirable. * Possession of a valid Class "M1" California Driver's License is desirable.
