Civil Air Patrol company history timeline

1942

By late March 1942, the Navy also began using the services of CAP.

Beginning in October 1942, a CAP cadet program allowed young men and women from 15 to 18 to serve in the organization.

1943

CAP’s success with coastal patrol and other military-supported operations contributed to its transfer by executive order in April 1943 from the Office of Civilian Defense to the War Department.

In 1943, CAP worked with the Army Air Forces to recruit aviation cadets and allowed 17-year-old members of the Air Corps Enlisted Reserve to receive CAP training while awaiting call-up to active military duty.

1948

In 1948, 824 Air Medals were presented to CAP members.

1955

When the first cadets entered the United States Air Force Academy in 1955, 10 percent were former CAP members.

1973

The 1973 law making Emergency Locator Transmitters mandatory in aircraft vastly expanded CAP’s search and rescue capabilities.

1975

In 1975, for the first time, a civilian volunteer became CAP’s national commander, signaling a shift in the CAP-Air Force relationship.

1979

In 1979, CAP began flying Military Training Route surveys for the Strategic Air Command and the Tactical Air Command.

1985

A 1985 agreement with the United States Customs Service saw CAP conducting counterdrug reconnaissance missions for law enforcement.

1996

Chaplain Reutemann began his career as a cadet in the #CivilAirPatrol in 1996.

2001

11, 2001, ushered CAP into a new era of homeland defense.

2014

10, 2014, Speaker of the House John Boehner presented the medal to CAP National Commander Maj.

2022

131: Total lives saved by Civil Air Patrol so far in fiscal 2022, as credited by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center.
