SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
This position serves as support for operations on the jobs in which they are involved. Responsibilities range from participation in initial project set up and buyout, cost spread/estimate familiarity, job quantity tracking, on-site daily activity involvement, concrete material tracking, equipment and manpower productivity tracking, invoice approval, extra work ticket tracking, participation in job cost reporting, project safety compliance, quality control compliance, production analysis/tracking.
This position will require travel to jobsites, 50% travel is likely.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Manage small to mid-size projects, client and contractor agreements and budgets.
Effectively write and prepare technical engineering reports, plans and specifications for construction projects.
Assist in field operations as needed; this may include construction inspection, survey and other forms of field engineering. Oversee construction activities and compliance with construction documents.
Consult with clients and contractors to plan and develop strategies for their civil engineering design and support needs. Provide general oversight with contractors and sub-contractors.
Gather field survey data to determine precise location and measurements of points, elevations, contours, etc. through the use of conventional surveying and GPS methods. Prepares accurate field notes, drawings and records change in conditions while in field.
Ensure schedules and productivity objectives are achieved.
Candidate may be required to help with land surveying as needed. Training will be provided.
Ensure work vehicle is supplied with stakes, flagging, lath, etc.
Responsible for keeping track of oil changes or routine maintenance due on survey vehicle or UTV in advance so they can be scheduled for maintenance in a timely manner.

Job Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Civil/Construction Engineering with coursework in hydrology/hydraulics/ soil mechanics/construction and business coursework. Individual must have their PE license. The ideal candidate would have experience in municipal/buildings and highway design.
Excellent computer and strong technical skills, including Microsoft Office, AutoCad/Civil 3D.
Must be detail orientated, self-motivated with the ability to think independently, and have strong listening, interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to speak and write English clearly.

Must have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record and provide a drug test if asked to do so.

Summary Description The City of Urbandale is seeking motivated candidates for our Summer 2026 Civil Engineering Internship. Under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Engineering, interns will gain hands-on experience performing survey work, data collection, asset review, and data analysis to support the Engineering and Public Works Department. This temporary internship is open to undergraduate students pursuing a degree in civil or construction engineering and runs from mid-May through mid-August 2026.
Routine Job Duties/Responsibilities
* Collects traffic counts and assist with traffic studies.
* Assist with field inspection of public infrastructure inspections as directed.
* Perform data collection, GIS data entry and database management.
* Perform GPS data collection.
* Complete assigned projects of GIS processing and analysis in a timely manner.
* Develop maps and drawings utilizing GIS and MicroStation.
* Assist with field collection and database processing GPS data.
* Survey with GPS and Total Station Equipment.
* Complete projects and other duties as assigned.
* Assist with customer inquires and special projects as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
* Must be an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in civil or construction engineering.

In this role, you will provide crucial technical support and serve as a lead engineer on complex projects, utilizing your high-level expertise in engineering design. You will oversee project deliverables and completion for small-to-mid-sized projects, ensuring timely completion in accordance with established scope, schedule, and budget. Your responsibilities include executing QA/QC plans, mentoring and training team members, and maintaining quality control by conducting thorough checks on plans and deliverables.
