**This Opportunity**
POWER Engineers, Member of WSP, is currently initiating a search for an Entry Level Substation Civil Designer for our Freeport, Maine office. The following locations will also be considered: Augusta, ME; Foxborough, MA; Syracuse, NY; Ann Arbor, MI; and Columbus, OH. Be involved in projects with our Power Delivery Northeast Civil/Structural Substation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges.
**Your Impact**
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of transmission line design for new lines, relocations, upgrades, and fiber optic additions.
- All aspects of electrical civil design including permitting support, site design, foundation design, structure design, and control building design.
- The successful candidate will be responsible for learning, understanding, and implementing CAD knowledge; learning client standards, practices, and procedures to ensure that work produced conforms to the client's standards and expectations; being responsible for knowing and following POWER's standards, procedures, and processes; collaborating on design issues; and seeking guidance from those with more experience
- Preparation of drawing packages to satisfy client and code requirements
**Who You Are**
**Required Qualifications**
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
- Associates/technical degree in an accredited drafting program, or sufficient industry experience
- 0-1 years civil design/drafting experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, preferably in an engineering work environment
- Ability to successfully participate in multiple projects concurrently
- Mechanical reasoning skills and attention to detail
- The candidate must have strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills in order to work effectively with other team members
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship
**Preferred Qualifications**
- Experience in electric utility substation design (15kV through 500kV) is a plus
- Experience with AutoCAD Civil3D or Microstation Open-Roads (In-Roads) are beneficial
- Experience with Autodesk Raster Design or Bentley Descartes

- Good background with mathematics

Your Opportunity
As an Intern for Summer 2026 based in our Columbus office, you will work in a team environment and have exposure to water resources related projects. Our projects involve flood protection and risk reduction, dams and river diversions, land development, stream restoration, and other aspects of civil engineering. Candidates should be highly motivated and dependable students who are taking or have taken water resources and other civil engineering courses. Your Key Responsibilities
Candidate will assist engineering and administrative staff with such tasks as:
- Data processing and management using GIS to support hydrologic and hydraulic modeling
- Preparing spreadsheets, graphs, and figures for design reports
- Preparing design and construction plans, specifications, quantity take-offs and construction estimates
- Assisting with field work for data collection, site inspections and observations
- Building surface models in AutoCAD Civil3D
- Supporting Project Managers with various tasks to advance and track project progress.
- Internship is with the local Water Resources group, but there may be opportunities to assist in other disciplines in the office such as Geotechnical, Transportation, and Environmental Services.
Your Capabilities and Credentials

As a Civil Engineering Intern, you will:
Communicate regularly with your team and Project Manager about progress, schedules, and budgets
Prepare plans, documents, and calculations to support your department's goals
Develop skills in your discipline through hands-on experience and mentoring
Support a range of tasks, from designing and drafting to site visits, depending on your role
Requirements
Currently enrolled in a degree program in Civil Engineering or related field
Proficiency in Microsoft Office; CAD preferred where applicable
Valid driver's license and ability to be insured under company policy

Staff Civil Engineer, Columbus

Job Description
The Staff Civil Engineer will provide technical leadership to project teams who will be working on planning, evaluation, design and implementation of civil engineering projects. The successful candidate will lead the study-phase and/or design-phase of projects related to the civil, environmental, construction and industrial fields. The Staff Civil Engineer would regularly have interaction with employees outside of their department, regularly have interaction with clients, occasionally interact with the public (agencies, government entities, etc.), and rarely participate in selling to clients. The staff civil engineer is expected to manage assigned co-ops/interns, while being an example of professional presence, representing the Company and the department in a positive light, and have intermediate level of software knowledge of at least two (2) engineering software packages. This role
is not
required to have a Professional Engineering license.
Duties & Responsibilities
Consults with and provides guidance to project stakeholders and managerial staff regarding engineering requirements for construction of various designs, and modifications.
Uses design software and drawing tools to accurately render and communicate designs; plans and designs other necessary improvement related to type of project assigned.
Sets design specifications by computing appropriate engineering requirements (i.e. - water flow rates, traffic demand, earth work balance, etc.).
Plans projects based on the analysis of relevant materials such as drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, survey reports, maps, and other geologic and topographical data.
Drafts and presents reports on topics related to projects such as detention reports and engineering due diligence reports.
Perform calculations for materials, equipment, and labor needed to determine probable construction cost.
Collaborates with architects, contractors, and other engineers to ensure projects progress properly.
Collaborates with surveyors (or directs and participates in surveying) to establish installations or reference points, grades, elevations, and other factors that will affect construction.
Monitors project progress and ensures design specifications and standards are met.
Able to teach and explain to others the methodologies used by The Company.
Intermediate level of understanding of design tools and civil engineering practices.
Fundamental design of projects for sites. Inclusive of detention design.
Participate in appropriate meetings, association memberships, and events to establish, develop, and grow networking contacts.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Education, & Experience
Civil Engineering Degree (or related)
Minimum 2 consecutive years of Civil Engineering experience
Public speaking ability, desired
Execute basic design projects from start to finish as the primary designer of the project.
Develop baseline knowledge of state and local regulations
Required Skills/Abilities
Basic understanding of civil engineering principles, practices, and tools.
Proficient in computer-assisted design (CAD) and other design, data recording, and analyzation software.
Basic understanding of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of site and transportation infrastructure improvements.
Ability to identify and solve complex problems.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to be both creative and analytical.
Extremely detail-oriented and accurate.
Physical Requirements
Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
Must be able to travel to various project sites.
Must be able to access and navigate job sites and construction areas.
