The MORPC Local Government Summer Internship Program provides the opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to obtain practical work experience with a local government within MORPC's 15-county region to prepare them for possible careers in public service. MORPC coordinates the recruitment and placement of students to match each host's request; hosts make the final hiring decision and provide an hourly wage. Interns work for a host for a minimum of 16 hours to a maximum of 40 hours per week for a 10- to 14-week period, which means there are both part-time and full-time positions available. The summer 2026 internship program will begin on May 12th and will end on August 14th. Interns gain applicable knowledge to enhance classroom learning by working with current government professionals throughout Central Ohio and acquire insights into the services provided by a regional planning commission. Interns also can attend monthly commission meetings as well as special MORPC-sponsored events and are paired with a MORPC staff member to serve as their mentor during the summer internship program. Previous Civil Engineering/Engineering interns have gained experience using Microsoft Excel, Bluebeam Revu, ArcGIS, Hydro CAD, Streetmix, Adobe Acrobat, FMX, and other software programs on the job. Program Structure: Duration/Schedule: Flexible part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer months. Location: Cleveland - Onsite Start Date: January 2026 What We're Looking For: Enrollment in a four-year degree program in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field with current status of at least a Sophomore level. Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher. Proficient in Microsoft Office software: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills. Ability to succeed in a team environment. Ability to handle multiple tasks. Preferred Experience: Experience with Auto CAD and Pro-E. What You'll Focus On: Participate in Continuous Improvement projects. Assist in other projects and function as a resource for other team members. Participate in the fundamentals of product design and development including testing using a variety of tools and equipment. Refine slag analysis and standardization. Document and improve processes. Ability to meet the essential job requirements, with or without reasonable accommodation, as outlined in the job description.
