1998

By 1998, farmworkers had won industry-wide raises of 13-25% (translating into several million dollars annually for the community in increased wages) and a new-found political and social respect from the outside world.

2000

2000: Successful 234-mile march from Fort Myers to Orlando by the CIW calling for wage increases; formation of the Student/Farmworker Alliance.

2001

In 2001, having won some wage increases for Florida tomato pickers and investigated some of the country’s earliest cases of modern-day slavery, the CIW did a deep analysis of the industry to understand where the power to make true systemic change resided.

2004

2004: Ramiro and Juan Ramos sentenced to 15 years each in federal prison on slavery and firearms charges, and the were forced to forfeit over $3 million in assets.

2005

In March 2005, amidst growing pressure, Taco Bell agreed to meet all of the CIW’s demands to improve wages and working conditions for Florida tomato pickers in its supply chain.

2005: Yum Brands!, owner of Taco Bell, agrees to the CIW’s demands; one month later, CIW announces its new campaign against McDonald’s.

2007

In April of 2007 – in the culmination of a two-year battle with the largest restaurant chain in the world, McDonald’s – the Campaign for Fair Food took an important new step forward.

2007: McDonald’s agrees to the CIW’s demands; months later, the Florida Tomato Growers Exchange (FTGE) threatens to fine any of its members that sold tomatoes under the terms of the CIW accords.

2008

By the end of 2008, Subway, the largest fast food purchaser of Florida tomatoes, had also come to the table.

2009

2009: Bon Appétit Management Co. and the Compass Group agrees to work with CIW. CIW launches protests at Publix Supermarkets regarding its penny per pound program.

2010

2010: Aramark, Sodexo, Pacific Tomato Growers, the Florida Tomato Growers Exchange, and Six L’s agree to work with the CIW. CIW shifts its focus mainly to the supermarket sector.

2011

In 2011, CIW launched the Fair Food Program (FFP), a groundbreaking model for Worker-driven Social Responsibility (WSR) based on a unique partnership among farmworkers, Florida tomato growers, and participating retail buyers, including Subway, Whole Foods, and Walmart.

2012

In October 2012, after a six-year campaign, Chipotle Mexican Grill became the 11th company to put their weight behind the Fair Food Program, marking a significant moment for the food movement at large as worker rights were upheld as an essential component of sustainability.

2015

One year later, in January of 2015, the N.C.-based supermarket The Fresh Market joined the Fair Food Program as the 13th corporate partner.
