1950

The hospital was built and began operating in 1950.

1953

Committee to make survey and recommendations re: conditions existing at Homer G. Phillips Hospital 1953

1955

Yet by 1955, following an order from St Louis Mayor Raymond Tucker that patients of any race, color, or creed living in the western part of the city must be admitted to the hospital, Homer G. Phillips was no longer an exclusively black institution.

1956

1958

In 1958, James L. Dow, owner of P. J. Noyes Co., and the community added the Dow Wing to the north of the original building.

In 1958, the seven-story addition, known as the A building, was completed and opened for patient use and as a residence for student nurses.

By 1959, a new wing, provided by the funds of Mrs.

1960

In the late 1960’s, the first steps towards consolidation happened when the psychiatric and neurological departments at Phillips moved south to City Hospital #1.

1968

The 10-bed Weeks-Crawford Skilled Nursing Facility opened in 1968, named for Jane T. Weeks, second wife of Sinclair Weeks, and Frederick Erastus Crawford of Guildhall, father of Frederick C. Crawford, president of TRW, Inc.

1972

Another wing was added in 1972 called the Ed and Bess Forester Wing, financed by the Forester estate.

1974

In January, 1974, the hospital was renamed Memorial Medical Center.

1979

In August 1979, a wide range of complex issues surrounding Homer G. Phillips Hospital prompted its closure as a full-service facility.

1981

The Memorial Medical Center Foundation was established in 1981 to promote charitable support for health care in the Springfield community.

To provide a continuum of care, the Memorial Health System was formed in 1981.

1984

In 1984 a state-of-the-art cardiac surgery facility and expanded cardiology suites were completed.

1985

Until the facility closed entirely in 1985, Phillips operated only as an outpatient and emergency care facility.

1986

In 1986, Memorial Health System formed Memorial HomeCare to offer a resource for a variety of durable medical equipment and professional services for patients at home.

1987

In 1987, the hospital was no longer able to run because of bankruptcy.

1993

To meet the community's growing need for outpatient services, Memorial and a group of private developers completed an ambulatory services development in January of 1993.

Weeks Medical Center was formed in 1993 by the Lancaster Hospital Association and the Regional Medical Professional Association, a local physicians practice.

1994

In 1994, Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, Illinois joined Memorial Health System.

1999

2000

The ongoing need for improved patient services required renovations and a new covered entrance to Weeks Medical Center in 2000.

2003

Following a multi-million dollar renovation completed in 2003, Homer G. Phillips Hospital now thrives as a senior living facility.

2009

In January 2009, our primary care network was renamed Memorial Physician Services (MPS). MPS includes over 40 physicians, 10 nurse practitioners and a physician assistant serving patients in 11 locations.

2014

In April 2014, Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville joined the health system as a full affiliate.
