In 1808, a law required the county to take responsibility for and open a poorhouse and house of employment, according to documents from the Cumberland County Historical Society.
Then, when Perry County was established in 1820, Cumberland County was required to purchase a piece of land within its own boundaries.
The Edward Stiles farm, just east of Carlisle, was purchased in 1829 and was known as the Claremont Farms.
From 1968-97 the institution became known as the Cumberland County Nursing Home.
Then, in 1997, the name was changed to Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
