Claridge House company history timeline

1812

When the original incarnation of Claridge's opened for the first time in 1812, it was as a single-terraced house on Mayfair's Brook Street.

1854

At the same time, husband and wife William and Marianne Claridge were running their own successful hotel on Brook Street, eventually purchasing Mivart's Hotel in 1854.

In an ambitious move to expand their business, they buy the adjoining five buildings in 1854.

1856

The combination of the two properties was for a brief period known as "Claridge's, late Mivart's" until 1856 when it became simply "Claridge's".

Claridge’s opens in its own right in 1856.

It closed in 1969 “because of poor business” and the contents of the city’s first air-conditioned hotel were auctioned, including 8,000 yards of carpeting, tableware to serve nearly 800 persons, and more than 2,000 chairs.

1999

In 1999, designer David Collins transforms the Causerie into Claridge’s Bar, with a brief to slip quietly into the new millennium while keeping a firm hold on the last one.

2000

2000, The It-hotel: Claridge’s is adopted by a new generation of models, designers, musicians and artists.
