Internship Overview
Clark Dietz internships provide a great opportunity to apply academic learning to real world engineering projects through hands on experience. Interns also participate in group activities throughout the summer to learn about the engineering profession, technical areas, and career paths.
As a Civil Construction Engineer Intern, you will work as part of a team in the field and assist engineers with construction inspection services on a variety of municipal infrastructure and roadway projects. Duties will include assisting with site surveying and documentation of construction activities, computing quantities, and verifying measurements and layouts on project sites.
Requirements
Students with a declared major in Civil Engineering and an interest in Transportation are encouraged to apply.
Ability to read and interpret construction plans and documents and research specifications and codes as needed.
Ability to perform basic calculations to compute quantities, verify measurements, and organize and analyze data.
Good organizational skills with strong attention to detail and a willingness to perform a variety of tasks with guidance from other staff.
Good communication and listening skills with the ability to ask insightful questions and learn and apply new skills.
Previous experience using CAD software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Bentley ORD, MicroStation) is desired.
Proficiency with MS Office (Excel & Word) is required.
Valid driver's license is required.

* Serve as client and project manager (communications, scope, schedule, budget, and quality) on bridge-related projects and supervise other project managers and project engineers in the performance of engineering tasks.
* Provide QC/QA related to complex and advanced typical structure designs and projects.
* Assist in the preparation of project proposals.
* Assist in strategic planning and organizational activities with the Chief Structural Bridge Engineer.
What You'll Need:
* Bachelor's in Civil Engineering with a major in Structural Engineering.
* Illinois Licensed Structural Engineer (SE) (if office location is in Illinois)
* 10-25 years of bridge engineering experience, including experience with advanced typical and complex structures.
* Engineer-of-Record with hands-on experience in all aspects of bridge design, including codes, calculations, reports, and final structural contract documents.
* Knowledge and experience using structural analysis programs and bridge design software.
* Demonstrated leadership skills, communication skills, and the ability to work with various teams.
* Project management and Client Management skills and experience
* Strong communication skills and a willingness to work in a team environment.
* Must be comfortable being viewed as a technical expert in engineering analysis and design, as well as having a proven background of technical leadership on bridge projects.
* Experience working with IDOT, Tollway Facility, and/or Local Agency Bridge projects.

Specific Requirements include:
Electrical engineer with 4-8 years of experience in technically complex system design.
BS in Electrical Engineering. EIT designation required, Professional Engineer License (PE) preferred.
Wide range of design experience, including industrial power distribution, controls and MV systems.
Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with others and work on multiple, simultaneous projects.
Ability to solve complex power engineering problems.
Experience in Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office.
Working knowledge of codes and standards associated with electrical power, including National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code, and applicable IEEE Standards.
Ability to pass background checks and willingness to comply with immunization requirements that our industrial clients may require to access their facilities.
Ability to complete occasional travel to client sites in support of projects.
Preferred Qualifications:
NCEES Record holder preferred.
Knowledge of Navisworks software preferred.
Knowledge of SKM PowerTools, Easy Power and/or ETAP preferred.

Verify construction materials and constructed items are in conformance with project construction plans and specifications.
Document construction activities and quantities for use in pay request generation and approval.
Perform as-built surveys of project components utilizing GPS and Robotic Total Station.
Review shop drawing submittals and assist in project documentation and reporting.
Communicate and interact with supervisors, contractors, and clients.
Work in a team environment with exposure to a wide variety of project types across Civil Engineering.

Lead and supervise the construction inspection team.
Plan, prepare, and analyze construction documents.
Manage construction contracts utilizing CMMS software.

Farnsworth Group is seeking a Construction Technician in the posting locations below. Qualified candidates could be full-time or part-time/seasonal and will perform construction engineering services in the Central Illinois region. You will have an opportunity to work in the field on road and bridge construction projects.
Posting Locations: Champaign, Effingham, Normal, Peoria, Pontiac, IL
What You'll Do:
* Visit construction sites to provide quality control on construction projects to ensure plans and specifications, and local/state regulations, are being adhered to by contractors
* Review plans on constructability in conjunction with the engineers and project managers
* Perform quality control reviews of design documents, including plans and specifications, within the area of expertise
* Attend meetings with clients and project managers to convey and/or receive information
* Monitor contractor construction schedules to ensure projects are completed within established timelines
* Perform, observe, and record testing required by contract documents, and prepare reports
* Prepare written materials to document activities for information or reference purposes
What You'll Need:
* 4-12 years or equivalent of related experience
* Associate's in Civil Engineering Technology
* IDOT and/or ISHTA construction Phase 3 - CM experience required
* Expertise with documentation requirements and inspection procedures
* Valid Driver's License
* Local Agency, federally funded construction Phase 3 - CM experience preferred
* Active IDOT Documentation Certification desired
* Other IDOT Construction Certifications desired
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
* Must be willing to work outside in various weather conditions
* Must frequently lift and/ or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/ or move up to 40 pounds

Construction Resident Engineer

Farnsworth Group is seeking a Construction Resident Engineer in one of the below posting locations. You will have an opportunity to work in the field on road and bridge construction projects. The person in this position will be responsible for leading and supervising a field staff in contract management, administration, field engineering services and coordination of a mid to large size heavy highway construction projects. The candidate shall possess a strong background in construction management with residential streets, highways, bridges, utility relocation, trunk water main/sewer, retaining walls, stormwater pollution prevention implementation, traffic control review and related facilities. A person in this position is subject to occasional exposure to heavy traffic or adverse weather conditions. There are often interruptions to the work routine and must be able to think clearly and act effectively under these conditions. Posting Locations for this role: Champaign, Effingham, Normal, Peoria, or Pontiac, IL Job Activities:
Lead and supervise the construction inspection team.
Plan, prepare, and analyze construction documents.
Manage construction contracts utilizing CMMS software.
Supervise the preparation of inspector daily reports for inclusion on contractor progress payment estimates.
Direct and assist staff in reviewing and analyzing contractor project schedules, staging plans, traffic control plans, and other required submittals to ensure they meet contract requirements and restrictions.
Meet with contractors regularly to understand and review work plan and schedule, resolve issues in work areas, address scheduling concerns and sequence operations.
Assign, schedule, supervise, review, and accept the work on behalf of client.
Ensure that safety of personnel and the traveling public is paramount in all work activities.
Administer contracts and confirm compliance in accordance with contract plans and specifications. Oversee the activities of Construction Inspectors, Materials Coordinators, Office Engineers, and Administrative personnel.
Monitor contractors' work for compliance to schedule, budget, technical specifications, and legal requirements.
Conduct progress meetings and prepare reports on project status.
Communicate and implement safety policies, and procedures.
Recognize and act promptly on potential changes or additional work, contract conflicts or ambiguities in the plans and specifications and changes in field conditions.
Negotiate, analyze, resolve, settle, deny, and/or make recommendations regarding contractor conflicts and claims considering contract plans and specifications, estimates, conditions, costs, and time.
Conduct field visits to examine construction site conditions and issues.
Participate actively as key a member of the client's construction team for project delivery.
Specific Requirements include:
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering.
Professional Engineer (PE) License.
6 or more years of Resident Engineering experience for transportation projects.
10 HR OSHA, IDOT HMA and Concrete Level 1, and IDOT Aggregates certifications
Partnering approach to Construction Management.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
IDOT, Tollway, and/or Local Agency federally funded construction experience.
