Internship Overview
Clark Dietz internships provide a great opportunity to apply academic learning to real world engineering projects through hands on experience. Interns also participate in group activities throughout the summer to learn about the engineering profession, technical areas, and career paths.
As a Civil Construction Engineer Intern, you will work as part of a team in the field and assist engineers with construction inspection services on a variety of municipal infrastructure and roadway projects. Duties will include assisting with site surveying and documentation of construction activities, computing quantities, and verifying measurements and layouts on project sites.
Requirements
Students with a declared major in Civil Engineering and an interest in Transportation are encouraged to apply.
Ability to read and interpret construction plans and documents and research specifications and codes as needed.
Ability to perform basic calculations to compute quantities, verify measurements, and organize and analyze data.
Good organizational skills with strong attention to detail and a willingness to perform a variety of tasks with guidance from other staff.
Good communication and listening skills with the ability to ask insightful questions and learn and apply new skills.
Previous experience using CAD software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Bentley ORD, MicroStation) is desired.
Proficiency with MS Office (Excel & Word) is required.
Valid driver's license is required.

A Surveying Student Intern - Field/Office is a hybrid role where part of the time is spent in the office preparing surveying deliverables and part of the time is spent working with a field crew outdoors to complete various activities associated with mapping the earth's surface for transportation, energy, land development, oil & gas, and construction related projects. The proper application of surveying fundamentals, surveying tools, math, and GPS, VRS, Robotic Total Station, Terrestrial scanning, aerial drone technology, and CAD platforms is covered.

Job Activities:
* Operates, cleans & maintains surveying equipment as directed.
* Prepares clear, concise, and accurate field notes and sketches.
* Collects, processes, and downloads surveying field data.
* Learns the function of point codes and automated linework.
* Learns basic surveying principles such as leveling, traversing, public land surveys, metes & bounds, boundary surveys, and topographic mapping.
* Maintains surveying gear and company vehicles.
* Follows FGI Safety Protocols and completes daily Job Safety Assessments (JSA)
* Familiarizes themselves with traffic control operations based on field activities.
* Communicates with field staff, CAD Technicians, and project managers on a daily basis.
Specific Requirements include:
* Valid US driver's license & good driving record
* High School diploma or equivalent
* Currently enrolled in a surveying curriculum program (AS, BS, Certificate)
* Ability to operate in a mentor / mentee Team atmosphere
* Ability to understand and operate current & new technology
* Safety oriented
* Basic math skills, including trigonometry, geometry, and algebra.
* Previous office or field experience preferred
* Ratio of office to field work will vary based on project schedule and manager discretion
* Ability to travel for field work (approximately 80%)
Desired Qualifications Include:
* 0+ years previous surveying experience
* Currently enrolled in a surveying curriculum program (AS, BS, Certificate)
* Familiar with the basic principles of surveying.
* Previous safety training (OSHA, First-Aid)
* Previous field experience or desire to work outside.

Wide range of design experience, including industrial power distribution, controls and MV systems.
Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with others and work on multiple, simultaneous projects.
Ability to solve complex power engineering problems.
Experience in Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office.
Working knowledge of codes and standards associated with electrical power, including National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code, and applicable IEEE Standards.
Ability to pass background checks and willingness to comply with immunization requirements that our industrial clients may require to access their facilities.
Ability to complete occasional travel to client sites in support of projects.
Preferred Qualifications:
NCEES Record holder preferred.

Specific Requirements include:

10+ years of professional experience in HVAC and plumbing design for buildings.
A Professional Engineering License (PE) is required.

Experience with Carrier HAP, Trane Trace, or similar

In this role, the Survey Technician works primarily as an entry-level member of a Land Surveying Field Crew to complete various activities in the field associated with mapping the earth's surface for transportation, energy, land development, oil & gas, and construction-related projects. Operates, cleans & maintains surveying equipment as directed.
Prepares clear, concise, and accurate field notes and sketches.
Collects, processes, and downloads surveying field data.
Maintains surveying gear and company vehicles.
Follows FGI Safety Protocols and completes daily Job Safety Assessments (JSA)
Familiar with traffic control operations based on field activities.
Communicates with field staff, CAD Technicians, and project managers on a daily basis.
Familiar with basic surveying principles such as leveling, traversing, public land surveys, metes & bounds, boundary surveys, and topographic mapping
Interprets & extracts data from engineering plans & surveying documents.
Uses math formulas, calculators and data collectors to determine positional information.
Specific Requirements include:
Valid US driver's license & good driving record
High School diploma or equivalent

Ability to understand and operate current & new technology
Safety oriented
Basic math skills, including trigonometry, geometry, and algebra.

Participate actively as key a member of the client's construction team for project delivery.
Specific Requirements include:
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering.
Professional Engineer (PE) License.
6 or more years of Resident Engineering experience for transportation projects.
10 HR OSHA, IDOT HMA and Concrete Level 1, and IDOT Aggregates certifications

Work with a variety of projects for municipal client needs related to water, sewer and streets
Conduct field inspections, measurements or calculations
Perform condition assessments
Prepare and develop construction, design documents and plans
Manage projects and programs from inception to completion
Specific Requirements Desired:
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
2 - 5 years of Civil Engineering experience
FE or PE Certification, or expected to be obtained
Experience with IDOT, MFT and local agency projects
Experience or understanding of working with state and local authorities
Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil3D
Ability to work both in the office and field for construction engineering and observation
Management, communication, and organization skills
