Clayton County company history timeline

1858

Clayton County was created in 1858 from portions of Henry and Fayette, and was named for Augustin S. Clayton, a distinguished judge of Western Circuit of Georgia.

How did Clayton County get to this point? Well, it all began on November 30, 1858 when the county was formed from parts of Fayette and Henry Counties.

1859

Jonesboro was incorporated as a town in 1859, by which time it was the center of a prosperous community.

1860

Aside from its prosperous business activity, Jonesboro in 1860 boasted several private residences which were large and imposing.

1861

New business came into the town and there was a steady period of growth until the outbreak of war in 1861.

When the War Between the States began in 1861, Clayton County met the severe demands of the times.

1865

After the war's end in 1865, Jonesboro began the task of rebuilding.

1880

Nevertheless, Jonesboro emerged from the war with indications of returning prosperity, and the decade of the 1880's saw this realized in an increasingly stabilized business and agricultural economy.

In 1880, a group of the town's leading citizens organized as trustees, and founded Middle Georgia College.

1903

The Authority renovated the house next door (currently the administrative office) that was originally built in 1903.

1936

Jonesboro received international attention in 1936, with the publication of Margaret Mitchell's novel, Gone with The Wind.

1951

The first mayor of Lake City when it was incorporated in 1951 was Mayor J.L. Christian.

1955

A club which helped facilitate much of the early development of the city the "Lake City Improvement Club" was organized on February 9, 1955 as a Women’s Club in the home of Mrs.

Also in 1955, a map of the community was made, a census taken, houses numbered and mail boxes were made uniform.

1959

In May of 1959 the club changed its name to the Lake City Community Club.

1962

In 1962, Forest Park High School located on Phillips Drive was opened.

1970

In the 1970’s, the City of Jonesboro Housing Authority was created to provide housing subsidy to citizens living within the city limits of Jonesboro.

1982

On May 4, 1982, the Clayton County Board of Commissioners created the Housing Authority of Clayton County (HACC) to help stimulate the economic growth of the community.

1994

Upon the time of its founding until June of 1994 when its administrative office was opened, the HACC was a paper authority with a Board of Commissioners that usually met quarterly.

1995

In late 1995, the Authority, acting through a non-profit subsidiary corporation, purchased the Advantage of Atlanta Apartments, an RTC affordable housing property.

1997

In 1997, the HACC purchased the property to locate its headquarters at 732 Main Street in Forest Park, Georgia.
