The Custodian is a physically demanding position. The incumbent must spend the entire time at work standing, walking, lifting heavy objects, operating medium weight cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, sweeping and mopping floors and moving desks and furniture. The incumbent is required to do a great deal of stretching and bending, often in awkward positions. Operating floor machines, such as buffers, polishers, and waxers, are particularly hard on back muscles.
The Custodian works in a climate-controlled building environment that is exposed to noisy and dusty areas. Daily the incumbent works with dangerous and toxic cleaning products that can be very harmful to one's health if not properly utilized. Many of the cleaning materials give off noxious fumes and have powerful odors. If not handled properly, the cleaning materials can cause injury, sickness and/or skin irritation and rashes. In some cases, these products give off unpleasant odors. The incumbent also regularly must clean up blood, saliva and other bodily fluids that are unpleasant to deal with. This position may also involve working outside in various weather conditions.

POSITION SUMMARY
The janitor is responsible for keeping facilities clean and orderly throughout the HudsonAlpha campus. Staff members work in teams at the direction of a lead janitor and many duties are completed with limited or no immediate supervision. In the course of cleaning, janitorial staff may interact with all levels of employees and other tenants of the building. Janitors must display a courteous demeanor and have the ability to work unobtrusively yet efficiently. Janitors must be able to follow written and verbal instructions for daily assignments as well as for the use of cleaning solvents and equipment.
Janitorial staff members work one of two shifts. Routine and ad hoc assignments are made for each shift. Uniforms are required; corporate logo shirts are provided.
