What you will do Safety and Environmental * Tracks safety performance, managing safety programs that include annual training, scheduled safety meetings, safe job performance by employees, dealing with job performance issues as they arise * Assesses resources of safety SOPs (Standard Operating Procedure) and Guidelines * Reviews all safety incidents in the department and participates in developing cause maps * Tours the department for safety observations and employee contacts while verifying regulatory compliance * Guides and develops supervisors to effectively manage crews on safe work practices * Ensures compliance with all environmental OSHA, labor, and government regulation * Supports the behavioral safety program and ensures that safe work practices are followed Leadership * Manages and provides direction for the activities of Extruder/ pulp dryer shipping employees to meet production goals while balancing quality, productivity, performance, cost, safety, environmental, and morale to achieve positive results in all areas * Oversees daily management of mill resources, performance management, as well as positive and productive employee and labor relations * Promotes a safety culture and administer accountability for unsafe behaviors * Influences and develops employees' performance while growing employee competence through training * Ensures employees have proper training and tools to meet or exceed departmental and mill goals and objectives * Demonstrates leadership and leads change * Guides and develops supervisors who are responsible for day-to-day people management Production and Quality * Sets direction, identifies priorities, coordinates the activities with other departments as it relates to the area performance, and manages the operating budget for the area * Ensures adequate raw material supplies are maintained for continued production * Certifies production meets specifications * Works with Quality/Technical staff to resolve quality issues * Reviews operations training manuals for updates completion Continuous Improvement * Leads crews to improve processes by identifying and eliminating non-value-added activities (waste) * Uses understanding of customer needs and end use and the organization's customer service practices to set priorities, make decisions, and take actions that create customer satisfaction and prevent service issues from occurring * Utilizes strong problem-solving skills to ensure corrective actions for employee and/or production issues are defined and established, bringing open items to closure in a timely manner * Communicates to all levels of the organization as needed and participates with Department Managers from other areas of the mill to coordinate activities * Prepares and distributes information regarding changes to policies and procedures (as a result of kaizens or other CI opportunities) to employees Key Competencies & Attributes * Actively seeks and allocates appropriate decision-making authority or task responsibility to appropriate individuals based on their abilities, availability, motivation, and development needs; considers potential positive and negative impact, business unit priorities, organizational values, and the opportunity to enhance others' knowledge and skills * Identifies barriers that impact customer service and retention; communicates concerns and recommendations to others * Uses understanding of customer needs and the organization's customer service practices to set priorities, make decisions, and take actions that create customer satisfaction and prevent service issues from occurring * Creates relevant options for addressing problems and opportunities that will achieve desired outcomes * Systematically evaluates business opportunities, targeting those with the greatest potential for producing positive business results What you will need * High school diploma or GED required. What you will do As the Senior Cost Accountant, you are responsible for performing complex accounting activities for corporate accounting associated with maintaining ledger accounts, and for developing financial statements and reports for external reporting. Inventory Costing: * Understand manufacturing flow and its impact on inventory valuation and costing. * Maintain accurate cost information for all operating departments (including pulping, paper machines, maintenance, shipping and other). * Responsible for accounting for inventory valuation * Working closely with mill operations folks, responsible for the accounting aspects of physical inventory process including reconciliation of outside warehouses * Working closely with operations, identification of slow-moving, excess, and obsolete inventory to ensure appropriate inventory reserves. * Cycle counting completeness and accuracy. General Ledger: * Record adjustments in accounting records through routine and non-routine journal entries. * Perform reconciliations of inventory and various cost accounts in general ledger * Ensure month-end closing is completed accurately and timely related to assigned areas Compliance: * Responsible for audit requests related to inventory including observations, shipping and receiving cutoffs, and price testing for responsible sites inventory. * Assist with special projects, reporting initiatives to drive change and decision-making, and requests from internal business partners. * In connection with the Sr Director of Operations Accounting, Implement and maintain cost accounting policies and procedures.     Job Description Boise Cascade is hiring for a Safety Specialist at our Homedale, ID facility. The successful candidate must be bi-lingual in English and Spanish. Responsibilities: The Safety Specialist is responsible for working with the Region Safety Manager, Plant Manager, Supervisors and hourly production employees to support the continued focus on safety excellence, including maintaining OSHA VPP status at the facility. The candidate must be able to work in a production environment with all levels of management and be flexible with day-to-day activities including operating equipment, as needed. The Safety Specialist may lead small improvement teams, audits and inspections and must be comfortable coaching, presenting and intervening one to one. Key responsibilities include: Assist in leading efforts to develop and maintain a safety culture to improve the safety and health of all employees. Develop the safety skill set of safety committee leaders and hourly production employees in order to execute Division and Region safety initiatives. Work with other safety leaders and professionals to develop and share best practices. Communicates division and region safety policy as assigned. Provide advice on safety and employee protection, and performs audits to ensure that organization and government standards are met. Actively works to identify business improvements to reduce workplace accidents and illnesses. Assist management team in complying with Division and Region safety performance measures. Prepare appropriate reports and communicates safety results. Provide input of the incident investigation process. Establish and maintain a good working relationship with region and plant management, safety professionals, supervisors, and employees. Demonstrate strong commitment to safety, quality, environmental awareness, and continuous process improvement. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications: Prior experience with OSHA standards, accident/incident investigation, and or compliance inspections in a manufacturing setting is preferred. Candidate should be familiar with Emergency Response, HazCom, Respiratory Protection Standard, and other OSHA-mandated programs.
