As an Electrical Engineering Intern at Cleveland-Cliffs, the projects assigned will vary based on the intern's education level and plant location, but will generally reflect the duties outlined below.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Recommend and/or perform predictive, preventative, and emergency maintenance of equipment
Research, design, evaluate, install, modernize, re-design, operate, maintain, and repair machinery and equipment
Resolve equipment malfunctions, including those requiring scheduled shutdowns or breakdown action
Participate in planning, scheduling, and cost control of maintenance/engineering projects
Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports
Analyze current operating performance and standard operating procedures and make recommendations for improvement
Various other projects as needed to support the business
Minimum Qualifications:
Enrollment in Bachelor of Science program in the field of Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or other related technical degree
Completion of at least sophomore year of study by the summer of 2026

Design and implement new control systems for capital projects
PLC programming and application development
Enhance and support existing control systems. 24x7 support may be required for critical situations.
Develops design specifications and user documentation for control system capital projects
Complete control system hardware and panel design
Assist with the design and specification of process instrumentation including but not limited to temperature, pressure, level, flow, and valves
Specify equipment, obtain cost estimates, generate bill of materials and expedite purchasing and fabrication of electrical controls equipment
Support contractor management on project assignments
Support control system commissioning through site acceptance
Develop control system documentation and reference material for site operations and technical support personnel

Minimum Requirements:
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age

The Senior Controls Engineer is responsible for developing and maintaining systems that support both hardware and software aspects of motion control, SCADA, and automation projects. This role will collaborate closely with the maintenance and operations teams to enhance safety protocols, minimize downtime, and drive business advancement through modernization and digitization initiatives.

What You Will Do on a Typical Day:
Solve complex control engineering challenges and program using IEC 61131-3 languages within Rockwell Automation and Siemens toolsets.
Provide 24/7 support for businesses and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Collaborate with maintenance and operations teams to fix root-cause issues, reduce downtime, and improve safety.
Design, select, manage, program, and commission automation equipment to enhance existing systems, including PLC programming and interfacing with HMI, MES, and SQL database systems.
Enable internal and external partners to understand design standards, implementation strategies, and best practices, while maintaining proper documentation.
Identify opportunities to increase safety, reduce costs, increase efficiency, and improve quality.
Mentor and train others to improve safety, lower downtime, and expand off-hour support resources.
What You Will Need:
Bachelor's Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) or commensurate experience.
Five plus years of professional experience with automation and control systems design.
High level of proficiency working with PLC Hardware, PLC programming, automation controls, and Control Systems
Ability to contribute on large scale projects.
Knowledge of Electrical Standards (NFPA79, National Electric code, UL508A).
Knowledge of Safety standards (ANSI B11/RIA 15, OSHA).
Good working knowledge of CAD for updating and creating electrical drawings.
Applicable knowledge of HMI and programming languages.
Availability for on-call rotation 2-4x per month

"Nice to Have" Experience:
Demonstrated experience in full-cycle project management of CapEx projects
Eight plus years of professional experience with automation and control systems design.
Experience with multiple PLC languages.
Experience in Power Systems and Power Electronics.
Proficiency programming and tuning variable frequency drives
Heavy Industrial or similar industrial experience.
Experience in fast-paced iterative design and manufacturing environments
Knowledge of Industrial Ethernet networks, Wireless Networks, and field bus networking.
Experience with motion control systems consisting of motors, drives, and encoders.
Knowledge of cyber-security protocols and methods to ensure systems are secure and protected.

We're looking for a Digital Hardware Design Engineer who's eager to work on advanced wireless communication systems and high-speed digital hardware. You'll be part of a team pushing boundaries in RF, digital modulation, and next-generation broadcast tech.
What you'll be doing Designing high-speed digital hardware for data-acquisition and RF-related systems
Working on products that span everything from Long Wave all the way through S-Band
Developing digital modulators with adaptive pre-correction and crest factor reduction on FPGA platforms
