Assists the Manager in meeting productivity and labor expense targets. Oversees the training and competency of Sterile Processing Technicians. Recognizes and identifies the existence of problems or improvement opportunities and takes action to troubleshoot issues. Maintains employee schedule ensuring adequate coverage for hours of operation and call coverage on weekends and Holidays. * Assists SPD Manager in evaluations of Sterile Processing staff. * Acts as liaison and facilitates communication between sterile processing and operating room personnel/nursing units. * Facilitates the processing of instrumentation and equipment, ensuring quality and customer satisfaction. Assist with collecting data for Quality Assurance. * Reviews operating room schedules, anticipating needs and/or conflicts with instrumentation, coordinating instrumentation for all procedures with operating room personnel. * Responsible for the daily review of all recording tapes and biological / chemical tests from all sterilizers and records results. Implements hospital policy and procedure for positive biological tests. * Monitors staff compliance with all required safety precautions. * Assumes responsibility of department in absence of Manager SPD * Coaches' staff and rounds with staff consistently. * Conducts staff meetings/huddles and provides educational opportunities for staff. * Ensures SPD policies and procedures are kept updated. * Ensures the competency of all SPD staff and other staff who may be involved in high level disinfection and/or sterilization in other areas. Maintains departmental education records in compliance with regulatory guidelines. * Oversees quality and infection control initiatives for SPD. * Provides a comprehensive and technical orientation, education and training program for the sterile processing staff. * Assists Manager with managing labor and supply components of the budget. * Assists Manager in organization functions of the department. * Assists Manager in conducting annual performance evaluations of SPD staff. * Assist the Manager with evaluation of the department's service delivery. Recommends and implements process improvements. * Responsible for all daily operations in the absence of the SPD Manager. * Develops educational calendar for all in-service training. Provides education and training to SPD staff. * Demonstrated leadership in directing and maintaining productive and positive behavior among staff. *Other Responsibilities:* * Position requires an individual who is self-motivated, able to complete assignments with minimal supervision. Position Summary: The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible and accountable for all functions of the sterile processing department, under the guidance of the sterile processing department supervisors and manager. This position is responsible for working independently and with team members to ensure that all surgical instrumentation are properly decontaminated, assembled, inspected, packaged, sterilized, high level disinfected, marked for repair and placed in a proper repair location, and communicate incomplete trays and missing items to management and OR immediately. All instruments must be distributed, tracked and stored in a safe, secure, aseptic and timely manner throughout the hospital and clinics. Immediate-use steam sterilization, tray turnovers between surgical cases and releasing sterilized loads from the department must be performed observing standard practice. A Sterile Processing Technician ensures that medical instruments and equipment are properly sterilized and ready for use in surgeries and other procedures. The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the care and preparation of surgical instruments and supplies according to AAMI standards. The technician maintains established inventory levels by checking supplies and equipment. Orders supplies for the area. The technician performs the appropriate testing of all sterilizers and keeps accurate records. * Effectively organizes time, equipment, supplies and ensures needed items are readily available for the OR based on the daily schedule. * Uses equipment accurately to ensure no equipment is broken or instrument lost. * Confirms that proper aseptic techniques and procedures are used according to accepted standards of practice. * Assists in managing inventory of supplies and equipment to maintain availability and stock levels in the instrument room, decontamination room and sterile supply room. * Performs daily testing and load specific biological testing as required per policy and maintains sterilization logs. * Uses manufacturer's IFU's for cleaning and sterilization of instruments. * Performs the cleaning, wrapping and sterilization of equipment, utilizing multiple methods to include: steam sterilization, Sterrad, Steris, and high level disinfection with the automated endoscope reprocessor. * Ensures instruments are accounted for upon receipt from the OR. * Assists in the cleaning and turn-over of OR rooms between cases, as needed. * Performs other duties as requested by supervisor. Requirements: * High School graduate or equivalent * Instrument technician experience, 2 years or equivalent experience * Certified Sterile Processing Certificate required * Current Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification * Knowledge of standard precautions, aseptic technique and principles of sterilization and instrument handling. * Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. * Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. * Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. The Sterile Processing Technician Instructor will provide up to date and fully prepared instruction to Sterile Processing Technician students in an energetically and motivating instructional manner along with engaging in activities in student retention and manages the classroom/lab activities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Prepare course plans and materials: Delivering course lectures. Facilitating student engagement. Working one-on-one with students. Assessing students and providing developmental feedback. Deliver courses: Deliver lectures/facilitate labs via on ground or online. Grade projects and exams. Provide progress reports/mid-term feedback. Maintain grade book. Enforce HCI policies (attendance, dress code, etc.). Monitor progress and attendance: Direct and assess student progress in achieving theory (content: cognitive) and performance (competencies: psychomotor and affective) requirement of the program. Monitor student progress and follow-up as needed. Take and report daily attendance and enforce tardy and absence policies. Report attendance issues to the Program Director.
