Cleveland Fire Chief company history timeline

1863

Since the beginning of the Cleveland Fire Department in 1863, death has been an unfortunate part of the job.

1866

The Cleveland Division of Police as it is known today was established on May 1, 1866 with the passage of the Metropolitan Police Act.

1871

It was reorganized on April 1, 1871 when the Ohio General Assembly allowed taxes to be levied to pay for police services.

1903

In 1903 it was classified as a division of the Department of Safety headed by the Director of Public Safety.

1933

The decorated Mounted Police, the longest standing in the United States, has marched in Presidential inaugurations and funerals and won the championship in Military Mounted Drill at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933.

1961

Percy Barber and signed a contract to purchase a 1961 American LaFrance Pumper, four sets of turn out gear and a siren for the station for the cost of $16,000.

1965

In the summer of 1965, a monument was placed in Willard Park at East 9th and Lakeside.

1980

In the early 1980’s, The Standard Oil Company of Ohio (Sohio), whose world headquarters was in Cleveland, built a new corporate office tower on Public Square.

1990

In the early 1990’s, Cleveland Fire Department Chief Walter Zimmerer was on a tour of the City of Cleveland.

By the late 1990’s the Cleveland area was rapidly developing.

1993

On April 8, 1993, The Cleveland Fire Fighters’ Memorial Fund was incorporated.

During the month of October 1993, the four artists were brought to Cleveland for interviews.

Today Willard Park is still pretty much the same as it was in 1993.

1996

The goal of the Memorial Fund was to have the piece dedicated by March 17, 1996, at the annual St Patrick’s Day ceremony sponsored by the CFD Shamrock Club.

In September of 1996, The City of Cleveland informed the Memorial Board that Willard Park was going to be closed for some time.

1998

In 1998 the department hired two fulltime day shift firefighters.

2004

The amended contract stated the project must be completed by April 2004.

The first mention of suing the artist was brought up at the board meeting of May 5, 2004.

2005

During the board meeting of February 2005 the suggestion of suing Jimenez came up again.

Due to increasing call volumes and the expanding service area in 2005 the Cleveland Fire Department hired it first paid Fire Chief, Chris Ellington.

2007

Three months later, June 15, 2007, was the official dedication of The Cleveland Fire Fighters’ Memorial.

2008

Land was secured on Cleveland Rd north of highway 42 in 2008 and construction began on the second station.
