Cleveland Metropolitan School District company history timeline

1899

Eventually, the population of West Park was large enough to support a separate high school, West Park High School, which opened in 1899 at West 152nd Street and Lorain Avenue.

1901

Central graduated its first senior in 1901.

1917

By the early 20th century, the original schoolhouse, built in the 1870s, was unable to meet the growing neighborhood's needs. Thus in 1917 the city constructed a new Tremont School, believed at the time to be the largest elementary school building in the state of Ohio.

1929

By the fall of 1929, the West Park Kiwanis was leading a campaign to raise funds for a new school.

1945

1951

The school building that is now home to Whitney Young was opened in 1951 as Hoban Dominican High School, an all-girls Catholic School.

1958

Ralph Pfingsten is a JMH Alumni from the class of 1958.

1971

When the Cleveland Municipal School District first opened Whitney Young in 1971 (a few months after the death of Whitney Young, who died March 11, 1971), it was an all-girls school.

In 1971 the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (formally Cleveland Municipal School District) brought the school from the Cleveland Diocese.

1975

1978

In 1978, the Cleveland, Ohio, Public School System nearly had to declare bankruptcy.

After Cleveland voters rejected an emergency school levy by a more than two-to-one vote in 1978, Cleveland school officials had to secure a twenty million dollar loan from Ohio's Emergency School Assistance Fund to keep the city's schools open.

1980

To end segregation, the school district implemented a busing program, which cost more than twelve million dollars in 1980 alone.

2005

In 2005, Tremont Elementary was converted to a Montessori school.

2007

In 2007 Whitney Young became one of two middle schools in Cleveland to take part in the Rotsky Foundation.

2010

The Transformation Plan that was announced on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 categorized Whitney Young as a Growth School.

In February 2010 Tremont Elementary School narrowly avoided closure when Cleveland Metropolitan School District CEO Eugene Sanders vetoed a cost-cutting plan that targeted under-capacity schools.

2011

In December 2011, the State of Ohio Department of Education released the first ever ranking of all Ohio schools.

2013

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District occupied only about half of the building when Drury Hotels bought it at auction in early 2013 for $4.5 million.

2014

The building’s fate came to the fore again in 2014 when the Cleveland Metropolitan School District launched a multi-year construction/renovation program.

2015

John Marshall High School was rebuilt as three small schools underneath one roof when its new building opened in August 2015 and is known as the John Marshall Campus.

2016

Reopened in Fall of 2016, John Marshall School of Engineering is known for numerous academic programs including college preparatory academies and post-secondary enrollment options.
