Clifton Savings Bank company history timeline

1928

The beginning of our company’s history was on April 9, 1928 when Botany Building & Loan Association was chartered by the State of New Jersey.

1930

In 1930, the name of the association is changed to East Clifton Building & Loan Association.

The Bank changed its name in the mid 1930's to the Bank of Passaic and Trust Company.

1933

In 1933, the association becomes a member of the Federal Home Loan Bank and the office is moved to 226 Dayton Avenue, Clifton.

1954

Clifton Lutheran Sunset Home had its origins in 1954 on the former Clifton College campus.

1956

In 1956 the Bank acquired the Bank of Allwood located in Clifton, NJ. At the same time, the name was changed to The Bank of Passaic and Clifton.

1957

In 1957, Bosque Museum built a facility to house the large collection of early artifacts belonging to pioneer Jacob Nelson.

1972

The hospital served the medical needs of Clifton at this location before a new hospital and clinic were built at the present location in 1972 and renamed Goodall-Witcher Healthcare Foundation.

1976

The acquisition of the Bank of Wayne in 1976 created a need for a new identity, and the name Valley National Bank was chosen.

1981

In 1981, its 6th office in Clifton was opened at 1433 Van Houten Avenue, which today serves as the company headquarters.

2002

Clifton observed its sesquicentennial anniversary in 2002 and today continues to grow and diversify.

2008

The items had been housed in Clifton College until it was closed. It was rebuilt into a modern nursing facility in 2008.

2013

In September 2013, Chairman John Celentano, Jr. and President Walter Celuch simultaneously announced their plans to retire at year-end, having served the company for 51 and 25 years, respectively.

On November 20, 2013, the bank announced its intent to reorganize to a fully public stock holding company.

2014

On April 2, 2014 the newly formed Clifton Bancorp Inc. completed its final conversion to a fully public company, including a related stock offering.

2016

Two new offices of "CSBK - Your Forever Bank" were opened in 2016 at 1470 Garden Street in Hoboken, NJ and 640 Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair, New Jersey.
