Lab Assistant II includes all responsibilities of a Phlebotomy Technician. Technician is responsible for the accurate and timely collection, labeling, processing and distribution of patient specimens to the laboratory. Processing functions include timely retrieval of specimens from transport systems, verification of sample receipt in LIS, centrifugation and other pre-analytic steps including use of the automated track system. Order entry of tests into LIS and responsibility for processing of samples to a referral laboratory. At minimum, the LA II is responsible for two additional laboratory core competencies. This may include processing of micro samples, competence as an LA in a specific discipline of the dept (blood bank, core lab etc.)

Required Experience

Phlebotomy Technician I or II license from CA DHS
One year as a phlebotomist preferably in a hospital laboratory environment. One year as a laboratory assistant within the specific discipline.

We're looking for someone to join our team as a Laboratory Assistant who:

Collects, distributes and analyzes specimens in an inpatient setting. Supports laboratory including specimen ordering, processing and preparation for testing. Monitors specimens for send out to reference laboratory. Performs specimen collection as needed. Focuses on phlebotomy and specimen collection; may perform other, less complex technical and clerical tasks.

Essential Functions:

* Collects, processes, and preserves specimens. Performs clerical duties to process and report test results. Prioritize based on order status (STAT, ASAP, routine). Performs blood collection on inpatients and/or outpatients in all areas of the hospital or satellite locations, to include adult venipuncture, neonate venipuncture and heel stick and special testing such as bleeding time, blood cultures, etc.
* Ensures all specimens are properly labeled and meet specimen requirements. Resolves and documents labeling discrepancies according to policy. Processes and maintains records of specimens sent to reference labs. Assists in inventory management including ordering supplies and stocking supplies.
* Performs Microbiology primary processing including properly making slides for gram stains. Receives specimens in the lab properly and properly inoculates appropriate media.
* Performs testing according to laboratory policies including quality control standards, calibrations, and documentation. Documents quality control, calibration and test results. Performs collection audits on LIS to monitor status of specimens.
* Identifies specimens or tests results problems and notifies appropriate lab personnel. Reports panic, stat or other abnormal test results following approval of Clinical Lab Scientist.
* Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

You'll be successful with the following qualifications:

Education:

* High School Education/GED or equivalent: Required in CA; Preferred in HI and ORAssociate's/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Preferred

Work Experience:

* Experience in Phlebotomy in acute care environment: Preferred

Required Licenses/Certifications:

* Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) license: Required in CA; Preferred in OR and HIRefer to the Required Licenses and Certifications list for additional job and/or unit specific requirements.

JOB SUMMARY :
The CLA is responsible for assisting laboratory staff in routine moderate complexity testing used to diagnose and treat disease.

JOB DUTIES:
1. Collects laboratory specimens and places laboratory orders when appropriate.
2. Processes all specimen types to prepare for testing.
3. Performs and reports waived laboratory test results to include quality control.
4. Ensures that waived testing results are reported correctly and seeks help when corrective action is needed.
5. May be involved with phlebotomy training when appropriate.
6. Follows laboratory and /or laboratory supervision direction.
7. Completes annual competency.
8. Competent with the LIS and EHR systems.
9. Understand and use scientific and technical language and symbols.
10. Recognize slight differences in shape, color, and texture.
11. Use eyes, hands and fingers to operate delicate and sensitive equipment.
12. Work precisely and accurately.
13. Follow technical instructions which may be oral, written, or in the form of charts or drawings.
14. Use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgments.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Completion and certification in a dental assistant, phlebotomy, certified nursing and/or laboratory assistant program OR in a current clinical laboratory rotation OR holds a BS degree in a related medical field with includes laboratory experience desired.
