In this role, you will:

Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent

1 year of laboratory training or experience performing high complexity testing
Strong reading, writing, and analytical skills
Ability to operate general laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: telephones, computers, automated analyzers, centrifuges, microscopes, manual and automated pipettes, and audible alarms
Entry-level role; professional experience is not required. Internships, academic projects, or equivalent experience are welcome

The Medical Laboratory Scientist II, in their role as General Supervisor as defined by CLIA, may be delegated the responsibility of the day-to-day supervision or oversight of the laboratory operations and personnel performing testing and reporting results. Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager and Clinical Supervisors, the Medical Laboratory Scientist II is responsible for supervision of assigned workstations including Quality Control (QC) review, training, competency assessment of staff, and inventory management. The testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and for reporting test results. Each individual performs only those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities.

Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
Follow the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical consultant, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director.
Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.

1. Performs qualitative and quantitative tests and procedures using instruments and/or manual methods according to laboratory policies and procedures.
2. Operates all instruments/analyzers according to laboratory policies and procedures. Performs routine maintenance, function checks or calibrations on equipment according to policies and documents. Recognizes instrument malfunctions, documents problems as may be required, performs troubleshooting and repair according to established guidelines.
3. Performs quality control for all reagents and instruments according to policies and documents results. Takes action for all out of range QC results and documents corrective action steps if applicable.
4. Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation, and reporting of test results according to laboratory policies. Identifies aberrant patient test results and takes appropriate action; seeks assistance in resolution as needed. Documents all corrective action steps.
5. Participates in QA/QI activities as required. Participates in Proficiency Testing program including the handling and analysis of Proficiency Testing samples. Documents errors using hospital Safety Reporting System; informs supervisor/manager when safety reports are entered.
6. Plans, organizes, and prioritizes work duties to accomplish daily tasks and objectives. Supports and assists coworkers as needed to ensure the best possible patient care; able to work independently while functioning as a team member.
7. Performs other duties as required that may include inventory management, processing samples, call back of critical test results, and clerical duties.

The Smith Lab group is focused CAR T cell immunotherapy for cancer and protein engineering/synthetic biology; taking projects from conception to transgene design /genetic engineering, through reduction to practice, and into in vivo studies, and ultimately to the clinic. >10 clinical trials have launched stemming from the Smith team's pre-clinical work. The candidate will make substantial contributions to the leadership of our in vivo work among other contributions. This will include coordinating and advising other senior staff in the lab in terms of design and timelines for in vivo experimentation, planning, execution, and data analysis. The candidate is expected to partner with others in the lab to lead many of the ongoing and future in vivo efforts including hands on tail vein injections and other procedures, as well as liaisoning/coordinating with the DFCI Animal Research Facility and technicians to ensure efficient, robust, accurate, ethical, and thoughtful in vivo work of the group.
We expect a strong background in some of the laboratory methods required to perform this primary in vivo responsibilities, leadership responsibilities, and additional cell culture lab bench work. We provide training to expand the scientist's took box in terms of CAR T cell and cancer immunotherapy workflows. What you'll do:
* Perform a wide range of waived, moderate, and high-complexity tests with accuracy and confidence
* Evaluate specimens and apply established criteria to ensure quality results
* Run quality assurance and control procedures to keep our lab at the highest standards (federal, state, and CAP compliance included)
* Maintain and calibrate lab equipment so performance is always optimal
* Document and track results using advanced systems to ensure accuracy and compliance
* Recognize and troubleshoot control discrepancies, escalating when needed
* Independently prepare specimens, determine acceptability, and manage storage
* Follow lab safety procedures while supporting a culture of teamwork and precision
What we're looking for:
* Current certification from ASCP, AMT, or HEW
* A.S. in Medical Laboratory Technology OR B.S. in Medical Technology, Biological Science, Chemistry, Physical Science, or military equivalent (transcripts required)

Job Responsibilities
* Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria
* Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures
* Monitor, operate and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality
* Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving
* Prepare, test and evaluate new reagents or controls
* Report accurate and timely test results in order to deliver quality patient care
* Perform and document preventative maintenance and quality control procedures

Requirements
* Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or meet local regulatory (CLIA & State) requirements
* Minimum 1 year of clinical laboratory testing experience is required OR a MLS degree
* ASCP or AMT certification is preferred
* Ability to work independently and within a team environment
* Proficient with computers; Familiarity with laboratory information systems is a plus
* High level of attention to detail along with strong communication and organizational skills
* Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen

Responsibilities
Our research group investigates the biology and risk factors associated with pancreatic and other gastrointestinal cancers. We aim to improve outcomes for patients with these diseases both by identifying cancer earlier, when the chance for a cure is greater, and by improving therapy. We focus on learning from cancer patients by studying human biospecimens so that our discoveries can be rapidly and confidently translated into improved clinical care.
Our laboratory members include epidemiologists, biostatisticians, pathologists, data scientists, molecular biologists, and clinical researchers, all of whom contribute their unique expertise to our lab's work. We employ a broad variety of analysis approaches and techniques in our laboratory, including population-scale epidemiology studies, digital pathology, genomic sequencing, and spatial transcriptomic and protein profiling. Our tissue profiling work encompasses both clinical trial correlative studies and landscape-directed discovery studies. We work closely with the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center Biobank to acquire blood, tissue, and other sample types from patients at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Finally, we routinely collaborate both with investigators at Dana-Farber and across the nation to study pancreatic cancer using model systems and to conduct and lead clinical trials.
* Design and conduct studies using multiplex immunofluorescence, spatial transcriptional profiling, and other cutting edge, high-dimension tissue analysis approaches to evaluate pancreatic cancer pathology using human tissue specimens
* Collaborate with other laboratory members with expertise in pathology, molecular biology, and epidemiology/ biostatistics
* Mentor and supervise research technicians performing tissue-based analyses
* Serve as a liaison for collaborations with other laboratories and institutions
* Maintain laboratory protocol databases, patient tissue and slide archives, and digital assets
* Oversee and maintain laboratory infrastructure
* Assist in training new postdoctoral fellows and research technicians
* Conduct analyses using digital image processing software, such as in Form and QuPath, and statistical packages such as R and SAS
* Participate in group meetings and work collaboratively on larger projects with other group members
* Generate data for figures and tables to serve as the basis for published manuscripts
* Contribute to manuscripts describing research results
* Contribute to progress reports related to research funding
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
* Strong background in human pathology
* Experience with traditional pathology laboratory techniques, including slide sectioning, H&E staining, immunohistochemistry and special stains a plus
* Experience with translational pathology techniques, including multiplexed immunofluorescence, spatial transcriptomics, and RNA in situ hybridization a plus
* Experience in oncology research would be an advantage
* Strong commitment to cancer research is required
* Experience managing laboratory staff would be an advantage
* Ability to work independently and perform troubleshooting when needed
* Must have excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and work with a wide variety of faculty and staff.
