Summary:
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) is responsible for conducting and overseeing a wide range of laboratory tests across multiple disciplines, including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, and blood banking. This role ensures the accuracy and reliability of diagnostic results, participates in quality control and regulatory compliance, and plays a key role in laboratory management and policy development. CLS professionals work in hospitals, reference labs, and healthcare facilities, ensuring that laboratory operations meet state and federal regulations.
Essential Work Functions:
Perform complex laboratory tests and interpret results across various lab disciplines, such as blood bank
Oversee and validate test results, troubleshoot discrepancies, and approve diagnostic reports before release
Operate, calibrate, and maintain sophisticated lab instruments and automated analyzers
Ensure compliance with AABB, CAP, CLIA, FDA, and other regulatory standards, actively preparing for audits and inspections
Conduct advanced immunohematology testing, including antigen identification and antibody identification
Develop and implement laboratory policies, procedures, and quality assurance programs
Assist in training and mentoring lab staff
Supervise lab personnel, assign workloads, and provide performance evaluations as needed
Maintain accurate records of laboratory findings, quality control measures, and instrument maintenance
Communicate critical results to physicians and healthcare providers in a timely manner
Investigate transfusion reactions and other serologic discrepancies, providing timely and accurate reports
Make technical decisions regarding specimen suitability, troubleshooting, and protocol modifications
Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of practice

What you will do

Job Description
Licensed technologists must have a current & active license (California CLS Generalist). The technologist shall be proficient in assays/methodologies including, but not limited to: ABO typing, Nucleic Acid Testing, and serological assay (EIA, ELISA). The technologist is expected to execute both manual and automated test platforms.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
Follow laboratory procedures for handling and processing of sampling, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient results.
Follow prescribed procedures, performing any of the tests within any of the laboratory specialties. Calculate the results of the tests performed, if necessary.
Accurately enter results of testing, as needed.
Issue accurate test results, if trained.
Operate, calibrate, conduct performance checks, and maintain laboratory analyzers or equipment, as necessary.
Recognize and correct basic analyzer malfunctions. Notify supervision/management, when appropriate.
Maintain adequate inventory of supplies, reagents and materials.
Evaluate media, reagents, and calibrators according to established criteria.
Prepare reagents and/or media as per prescribed procedure.
Conduct established quality control procedures on analytical tests, equipment, reagents, media, and products. Evaluate results of quality control, and implement corrective action(s) when indicated.
Review and follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Accept or reject test results in accordance with SOPs.
Orient, mentor and/or teach new employees and/or employees that require cross-training on clinical laboratory methods, procedures and techniques.
Adhere to all Quality Assurance, HIPAA and Safety standards.

Purpose Statement/Position Summary:
This Clinical Lab Scientist Supervisor will supervise the Blood Donor Center - which is responsible for all the blood and platelet collections at CHLA. They will oversee the phlebotomists, mobile driver, RNs, and recruitment team. They will work with marketing and other groups to increase hospital collections and reduce reliance on purchases from the Red Cross.
This position ensures that recruitment and collection-related activities are conducted in the safest possible manner and meet or exceed all regulatory standards. The Supervisor performs appropriate budgetary, disciplinary, and HR-related activities and participates in hospital and departmental meetings.
Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience
Required:
5+ in Transfusion Medicine and Blood Donor Center
* General knowledge of all areas of the clinical lab including phlebotomy.
* Working knowledge of basic office software, LIS and/or HIS computer systems.
* Experience in scheduling & training.
Experience initiating and evaluating operational initiatives to improve quality, throughput, and care. Ability to lead others and apply organizational skills. Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully verbally and in writing.
Preferred: Previous supervisory and fiscal management experience. Thorough knowledge of the principles pertaining to the area of responsibility. Familiar with FDA, AABB and CAP Regulations.

What will you be doing in this role?
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist I (CLS I) is an entry level position that functions under the direction of senior technical personnel. Responsibilities include performing routine laboratory tests and may include some technically complex assays. The CLS I's activities include operating and maintaining test equipment, performing and documenting QC, recognizing and responding to problems, and verifying and reporting test results. The CLS is responsible for performing laboratory testing, quality control measures, and distribution of test results of biological specimens in an accurate and timely manner. Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies; documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
