The Clinical Lab Scientist is a licensed professional responsible for performing high-complexity clinical laboratory testing, with emphasis on Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and assay validation, in accordance with Pangea's protocols and regulatory standards. This role maintains competency in all phases of testing (pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic), operates and troubleshoots automated laboratory instruments, and ensures accurate and timely entry of patient results into the laboratory information system. The Clinical Lab Scientist is accountable for real-time documentation of testing activities, quality control, preventive maintenance, and corrective actions when test systems deviate from established performance specifications. Working under the direction of the Laboratory Director (or designee), this position also supports the evaluation and implementation of new methods, contributes to the creation and revision of standard operating procedures, manages reagent and supply inventory, adapts to evolving workflows, and effectively communicates with management, auditors, clients, and internal teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs and maintains competency in all technical procedures (pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic) per Pangea's protocols and procedures.
Operates automated laboratory instrumentation assigned to designated department and/or shift, including troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, calibration and repair procedures as required.
Consistently and accurately transcribes patient test results from raw data generated from an instrument into the laboratory information system.
Must have good reasoning ability; be knowledgeable of clinical pathology processes and use organizational skills to meet established turnaround time deadlines.
Responsible for the accurate documentation of all testing activities including but not limited to patient specimens, proficiency testing, quality control results, performance of preventive maintenance/calibration of instruments, and LIS results entry.
Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problem(s) or immediately notify the General Supervisor, Chief Operating Officer or Laboratory Director.
Responsible for the documentation of corrective actions when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
Responsible for the inventory monitoring, labeling, and storing of incoming reagents and supplies.
Maintains complete and documents records in real time that includes but is not limited to department logs, files, batch records, and work sheets.
Participates in the evaluation of new methods and procedures under the direction of the Laboratory Director or designee.
Adapts to changes in processes, accepting approved changes and learning new tasks.
Responsible for the creating and revising standard operating procedures following all document control processes.
Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
Education and Experience:
A minimum of two years of experience as an active licensed clinical laboratory scientist is preferred, including Next Generation Sequencing and assay validation.
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
State of California license required; Generalist CLS license is preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills or Abilities:
Knowledge of basic computer skills such as Microsoft Office Suite to include Excel and Word.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret such documents as pertaining to the performance and analysis of analytical testing. This could include but not limited to reagent package inserts, and standard operating procedures.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from management, clients, auditors and internal customers.

DEFINITION
Performs a variety of standardized clinical laboratory tests within a specialized area (such as biochemistry, hematology, microbiology, or immunohematology) or across specialty lines using manual or instrumented methodology.
* Performs specific biochemical tests on body specimens such as whole blood, blood plasma, serum, urine, spinal fluid, gastric secretions and similar products to determine the presence and quantity of metabolic and endocrine substances such as glucose, albumin, protein, urea, electrolytes, enzymes, acetone bodies, thyroid proteins, reproductive hormones, and tumor markers or to identify the presence and amount of toxic substances such as drugs and poisons.
* Performs macroscopic and microscopic examination of urine samples for the determination of blood glucose and albumin.
* To detect the presence of acetone bodies, blood, bile derivatives, Bence-Jones protein, drugs and poisons in the urine using a urinometer and determines specific gravity of urine.
* Conducts hematological tests such as red blood cell count, reticulocyte, platelet, eosinophil, and leukocyte counts.
* Microscopically examines blood smears for abnormal cells, and performs blood sedimentation tests, hemoglobin determinations, and hematocrits.
* Cultures, isolates, and identifies enteric pathogens, parasites, tubercle bacilli, pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and other micro-organisms in blood, sputum, urine, feces, exudates, tissues, spinal fluid and similar substances using standardized laboratory procedures.
* Draws, groups, types, and cross-matches donor-recipient and patient blood.
* Performs antibody screening tests and antibody identification tests to resolve cross-matching problems.
* Issues whole blood and blood components for transfusion purposes and performs related blood bank activities.
* Performs immuno serological test methods such as flocculation, agglutination, complement filtration, direct and indirect fluorescence, enzyme immuno assays, molecular pathology, and serologic tests to determine the efficacy of test performed and to identify the presence and measure the quantities of antibodies associated with various medical conditions.
* Calibrates laboratory instruments following prescribed methods, and performs other quality control and improvement procedures to assure the operational accuracy of equipment and test reproducibility.
* Performs manufacturer recommended period routine maintenance on such equipment.
* Utilizes computer programs that operate in conjunction with laboratory equipment.
* Enters test results, quality control and improvement data.
* Provides instructions to medical personnel on specimen collection requirements such as the type of container and appropriate volume, type of preservative and other handling instructions.
* Provides bench-level instruction on the detailed aspects of assignment to licensed trainees and new laboratory scientists and medical personnel in training.
* Assists with inventory control, ordering supplies, storing supplies, stocking/restocking supplies and rotating supplies to ensure timely use.
* Oversees the work of Laboratory Assistants and Phlebotomy Technicians assigned to assist with testing.

Valid and Current Clinical Laboratory Scientist's license, issued by the State of California Department of Health Services.*
Physical Class II- Light: Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.

Job Description
Licensed technologists must have a current & active license (California CLS Generalist). The technologist shall be proficient in assays/methodologies including, but not limited to: ABO typing, Nucleic Acid Testing, and serological assay (EIA, ELISA). The technologist is expected to execute both manual and automated test platforms.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
Follow laboratory procedures for handling and processing of sampling, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient results.
Follow prescribed procedures, performing any of the tests within any of the laboratory specialties. Calculate the results of the tests performed, if necessary.
Accurately enter results of testing, as needed.
Issue accurate test results, if trained.
Operate, calibrate, conduct performance checks, and maintain laboratory analyzers or equipment, as necessary.
Recognize and correct basic analyzer malfunctions. Notify supervision/management, when appropriate.
Maintain adequate inventory of supplies, reagents and materials.
Evaluate media, reagents, and calibrators according to established criteria.
Prepare reagents and/or media as per prescribed procedure.
Conduct established quality control procedures on analytical tests, equipment, reagents, media, and products. Evaluate results of quality control, and implement corrective action(s) when indicated.
Review and follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Accept or reject test results in accordance with SOPs.
Orient, mentor and/or teach new employees and/or employees that require cross-training on clinical laboratory methods, procedures and techniques.
Adhere to all Quality Assurance, HIPAA and Safety standards.
Adhere to all testing turnaround timelines.

The pay range for this position at the commencement of employment is expected to be between $37.62 and $53.70/hour non-exempt; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Essential Functions:
* Employs positive patient identification procedures to ensure the integrity of each specimen for pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical testing. Adheres to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other patient confidentiality guidelines and regulations.

* Reviews and evaluates the validity and accuracy of test results, recognizing the interdependency of tests, the physiological conditions affecting results, patient age and normal values, controls, linearity errors, instrument codes, delta checks and more. * Disposes of contaminated materials and equipment in accordance with policy and assures that work area is properly cleansed after each test.
