Job Essentials:
Examines specimens microscopically and performs cellular evaluation for cancer detection and identification of other pathologic conditions.
Verifies the identification of the specimen with the patient's name, accession number, and type of specimen on slide(s) and requisition and assures that established procedures are followed for collection, preparation, processing and evaluation for all specimens submitted for cytological exams.
Evaluates general cellular preparations according to adequate material on slides and assures the number of slides examined or reviewed does not exceed the limit set by CLIA regulations.
Discriminates between normal and abnormal cellular components, identifies cellular and non-cellular components, and locates and marks areas for further study.
Performs evaluations and preparations in accordance with special requests, provides additional diagnostic interpretation as required, makes evaluation of abnormal specimens, and submits evaluation and specimen to pathologist for final evaluation and reporting to referring physician.

POSITION SUMMARY
This position performs waived and non-waived tests as defined by CLIA '88 in an accurate and timely manner with supervision. May be responsible for the collection, receipt, and processing of biological specimens into the laboratory.
Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Performs testing in an accurate and timely manner according to established policies and performance standards with a knowledge level determined for that testing. Responsible for startup, calibration and accuracy of procedures and instrumentation. Exercises independent judgment and can identify appropriate resources in performance of assigned duties utilizing knowledge and skills. Demonstrates comprehension of theory and clinical relevance of testing. Demonstrates problem resolution and decision-making skills for routine operational and technical problems. Demonstrates knowledge of computer systems used in the department and can perform basic troubleshooting of computer problems. Demonstrates awareness and complies with accrediting agency and regulatory requirements related to area of responsibility.
2. Recognizes and ensures validity of abnormal patient and/or QC results for testing. Ensures accuracy of test results. Participates in detecting and documenting occurrences that deviate from defined procedures. Demonstrates appropriate resolution and follow through for problem solving identified during testing. Promotes and consistently meets department standards for productivity and quality
3. Ensures the appropriate use of supplies and materials and assists with inventory management. Ensures efficient utilization of reagents and supplies. Recognizes and provides input towards opportunities for improvements in financial performance to decrease costs, improve productivity, and improve service.
4. Self-directed and motivated to contribute to projects identified by the supervisor. Seeks out opportunities to identify projects relating to department needs. Active in training of laboratory personnel. Performs well in supervisor's absence and provides guidance on issues relating to pre-analytical, waived and non-waived testing. Completes all required training modules.
5. Communicates courteously, professionally, effectively and accurately with internal and external customers. Participates in the resolution of communication issues. Knows and utilizes appropriate resources for increased levels of problem solving. Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills. Promotes positive communications that enhances teamwork. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicant must meet one of the following criteria to qualify:
Associate degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or
Bachelor's degree in chemical or biological science (transcripts will be reviewed to determine eligibility).
Equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting the requirements defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489, or
Meet other criteria defined in 42CFR493.1489 or 42CFR493.1491 (including US military medical laboratory procedures training courses)
Foreign educated candidates must provide a detailed credential evaluation from IERF (International Education Research Foundation) or other nationally recognized credentialing agency for review to determine eligibility and translated diploma.
Demonstrated competency in phlebotomy in departments where applicable.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
MLT certification (ASCP, AMT, HEW, AAB).
Basic knowledge of specimen requirements and knowledge of medical terminology.

ASCP or AMT are required within 6 months of hire. ASCP is the preferred certification. Continued employment will be based on valid certification
Associate degree in related science required. Bachelors degree in related science preferred.
A college graduate or equivalent who has passed a certification examination for Medical Technologist by ASCP or AMT or has completed an accredited MLT program with ASCP Board Certification is also accepted.

Requirements:
To be seriously considered for this role, you'll need to have:
* Education: Completion of a Medical Technology Program approved by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institutes (CLSI) or three years of academic studies at an accredited college and completion of 12 consecutive months of internship in an accredited school of medical technology, leading to a Bachelor's Degree.
* Experience: Must have completed an internship in an accredited school of Medical Technology. Must have a comprehensive knowledge of laboratory procedures, techniques and instrumentation and the ability to exercise a high degree of initiative and judgment while performing routine and emergency procedures.
* Licenses/Certification: ASCP board certified, or equivalent, or qualified through examination by the Health, Education and Welfare accreditation program.
* Skills -
* Knowledge of blood bank, chemistry, special chemistry, coagulation, hematology, serology, phlebotomy and minimal microbiology.
* Consistently reports stat results within 30-60 minutes
* Ability to test and report within the required turn-around-time, prioritizing appropriately. Communicates or resolves specimen or testing problems quickly and completely.
* Ability to demonstrate competency in routine (venipuncture) and special collection techniques by obtaining acceptable specimens including, blood gases, throat swabs, influenza swabs, timed specimens, blood culture collection, blood bank specimens, coagulation studies, difficult draws and special situations.
* Ability to exercise sound judgement, determine priorities, and manage time
Responsibilities:
As the MT or MLT at Gunnison Valley Health, you will be performing various clinical laboratory tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. You'll utilize your unique skills and ideas by:
* Referring unsolved problems to the appropriate person.
* Assisting, orienting, and training co-workers and other hospital/medical personnel in laboratory policies and procedures.
* Performing additional confirmation or alternative testing when appropriate.
* Demonstrating the ability to correlate lab results with clinical information and other laboratory results to assess/validate tests results and procedures.
* Demonstrating the ability to maintain, troubleshoot, calibrate and operate instruments to provide accurate and efficient testing.
Medical Technologist - $31.07/hr - $40.25/hr, DOE. (Opportunity for increase with 1 yr service if assigned a Section Supervisor role.)
Medical Laboratory Technician - $26.64 - $35.00/hr DOE
Current GVH employees transferring departments are not eligible for the Sign N Stay Bonus
