Lead Medical Technologist
Department: Blood Bank
Schedule: Full Time
Assigned responsibilities:
Reviews and evaluates daily and periodic Quality Control testing and procedures.
Ensures performance of periodic instrument maintenance and departmental quality control procedures. Coordinates CAP survey performance and reporting.
Assists with creation of validation plans as may be required for equipment or procedures, and ensures completion of validation package for final review.
Performs Meditech validation exercises as may be required with system upgrades or site specific changes. Ensures department is prepared for planned Meditech downtime.
Monitors transfusion activity at contracted transfusion service client sites for regulatory compliance; may be required to make periodic site visits.
Acts as liaison with Nursing Education to evaluate and/or update mandatory training material. May be asked to assist with creating lessons. Assists with ensuring Blood Bank policies are appropriately posted to SEMC MCN Policy Manager.
Ensures blood product inventory levels are adequate for transfusion support and works to reduce product wastage.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associate's degree in medical technology or related science and 3-5 years' full time experience as Clinical Laboratory Technologist, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (If none, please enter “N/A”):
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or a related science, attainment of degree within 6 months of start date.
6 years in an accredited blood center or transfusion service.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs) (If none, please enter “N/A”)
Knowledge of complex laboratory procedures.

The Medical Laboratory Scientist II, in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, may perform waived and non-waived testing. Under general supervision, carries out all policies and performs all tests in accordance with the department's standard operating procedures. Works independently in an efficient and organized manner to assure accurate results and records. The work requires a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret accurately test results used by providers in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
The Medical Laboratory Scientist II, in their role as General Supervisor as defined by CLIA, may be delegated the responsibility of the day-to-day supervision or oversight of the laboratory operations and personnel performing testing and reporting results. Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager and Clinical Supervisors, the Medical Laboratory Scientist II is responsible for supervision of assigned workstations including Quality Control (QC) review, training, competency assessment of staff, and inventory management. The testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and for reporting test results. Each individual performs only those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities.

As outlined by CLIA, after successful completion of orientation, training and competency assessment on all instruments/methods applicable to their role:
Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
Follow the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical consultant, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director.
Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.

Job Summary Overview
In a highly regulated environment (FDA, AABB, TJC, DPH, CMS, NRC), the Blood Bank Technologist plays a critical role in ensuring patients receive the necessary blood products. This position involves performing testing, processing blood products, and maintaining compliance with the department's Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The technologist works both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced laboratory setting while also assisting in the training of new employees and students.
Key Responsibilities
Blood Bank Operations
Process specimens, fill orders, issue blood products, and minimize wastage.
Handle phone inquiries and collaborate with other departments.
Recognize and respond appropriately to emergent situations.
Laboratory Testing & Quality Control
Perform critical tests, including ABO/Rh typing, antibody screening, compatibility testing, direct antiglobulin tests, and transfusion reaction investigations.
Maintain an efficient workflow, integrating STAT requests with routine testing.
Operate and troubleshoot Blood Bank instrumentation, conduct quality control (QC), and maintain equipment.
Blood Component Processing
Comply with cGMPs for manufacturing and modifying blood components.

This will include coordinating and advising other senior staff in the lab in terms of design and timelines for in vivo experimentation, planning, execution, and data analysis. The candidate is expected to partner with others in the lab to lead many of the ongoing and future in vivo efforts including hands on tail vein injections and other procedures, as well as liaisoning/coordinating with the DFCI Animal Research Facility and technicians to ensure efficient, robust, accurate, ethical, and thoughtful in vivo work of the group.
We expect a strong background in some of the laboratory methods required to perform this primary in vivo responsibilities, leadership responsibilities, and additional cell culture lab bench work. We provide training to expand the scientist's took box in terms of CAR T cell and cancer immunotherapy workflows. Additional opportunities for growth are attending lectures and journal clubs held here at DFCI and participating in academic and industry collaborations. The work is highly translational and there is a clear path to moving to the clinic candidates based on this work. The applicant will have ample opportunity to design, conduct, and work with CROs to support in vivo IND enabling studies.

Summary
The Medical Laboratory Scientist II, in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, may perform both waived and non-waived testing. Under general supervision, they carry out all policies and perform all tests in accordance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures. This role requires a professional level of knowledge to accurately read and interpret test results used by providers in diagnosing and treating diseases.
As General Supervisor as defined by CLIA, the Medical Laboratory Scientist II may be delegated responsibility for the day-to-day supervision or oversight of laboratory operations and the personnel performing testing and reporting results. Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager and Clinical Supervisors, they are also responsible for supervising assigned workstations, including Quality Control (QC) review, staff training, competency assessments, and inventory management.
Testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and reporting of results. Each individual performs only those tests authorized by the laboratory director that require a level of skill aligned with their education, training, experience, and technical abilities.

After completion of orientation, training, and competency assessment on instruments and methods applicable to their role, the Medical Laboratory Scientist II must:
Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and record maintenance.
Maintain records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are analyzed in the same manner as patient samples.
Adhere to quality control policies and document all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
Follow established corrective action policies whenever test systems fall outside acceptable performance ranges.
Identify issues that may adversely affect test performance or results, and either correct them or promptly notify the appropriate supervisor or director.
Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.

The Immune Monitoring Laboratory at the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute is seeking a motivated Medical Laboratory Scientist with a keen interest in immunology and a passion for supporting transformative cell therapy research. Qualifications
Essential Functions
* Perform multi-parameter flow cytometry using BD FACSLyric and spectral Cytek Aurora instruments to assess immune phenotype and CAR-T response. Increasing levels of data analysis and interpretation are encouraged as experience grows.
* Process and bank clinical research specimens, including blood, bone marrow, cerebrospinal fluid, and solid tissues collected from patients undergoing immune-based therapies.
* Take a lead role in the development, optimization, and scientific refinement of immune monitoring assays, including spectral flow and molecular methodologies.
* Perform and report immunoassays, including ELISA and multiplex cytokine profiling, using Luminex and ELLA platforms.
* Extract DNA using the QIAcube, perform and analyze dd PCR to support CAR-T expansion monitoring in clinical trials.
* Conduct cell sorting using the SONY MA900 in accordance with study needs.
* Support validation, verification, and implementation of new technologies into laboratory workflows.
* Take a lead role in QC processes, oversee preventative maintenance, and calibration of specialized instruments.
* Maintain meticulous data accuracy, sample tracking, and documentation aligned with regulatory and institutional standards.
* Troubleshoot challenges and contribute to process improvement and laboratory efficiency.
* Assist in onboarding and mentoring new team members to foster a strong learning culture.
* Draft and revise SOPs and method validation documents within established document control procedures.
* Participate in incident investigations and corrective action efforts to support quality management
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Immunology, Biology, or related life science field is required. MLS ASCP board certification is preferred.

2. Operates all instruments/analyzers according to laboratory policies and procedures. Performs routine maintenance, function checks or calibrations on equipment according to policies and documents. Recognizes instrument malfunctions, documents problems as may be required, performs troubleshooting and repair according to established guidelines.
3. Performs quality control for all reagents and instruments according to policies and documents results. Takes action for all out of range QC results and documents corrective action steps if applicable.
4. Responsible for the accuracy, interpretation, and reporting of test results according to laboratory policies. Identifies aberrant patient test results and takes appropriate action; seeks assistance in resolution as needed. Documents all corrective action steps.
5. Participates in QA/QI activities as required. Participates in Proficiency Testing program including the handling and analysis of Proficiency Testing samples. Documents errors using hospital Safety Reporting System; informs supervisor/manager when safety reports are entered.
6. Plans, organizes, and prioritizes work duties to accomplish daily tasks and objectives. Supports and assists coworkers as needed to ensure the best possible patient care; able to work independently while functioning as a team member.

The Smith Lab group is focused CAR T cell immunotherapy for cancer and protein engineering/synthetic biology; taking projects from conception to transgene design /genetic engineering, through reduction to practice, and into in vivo studies, and ultimately to the clinic. >10 clinical trials have launched stemming from the Smith team's pre-clinical work. The candidate will make substantial contributions to the leadership of our in vivo work among other contributions. This will include coordinating and advising other senior staff in the lab in terms of design and timelines for in vivo experimentation, planning, execution, and data analysis. The candidate is expected to partner with others in the lab to lead many of the ongoing and future in vivo efforts including hands on tail vein injections and other procedures, as well as liaisoning/coordinating with the DFCI Animal Research Facility and technicians to ensure efficient, robust, accurate, ethical, and thoughtful in vivo work of the group.
We expect a strong background in some of the laboratory methods required to perform this primary in vivo responsibilities, leadership responsibilities, and additional cell culture lab bench work. We provide training to expand the scientist's took box in terms of CAR T cell and cancer immunotherapy workflows. Additional opportunities for growth are attending lectures and journal clubs held here at DFCI and participating in academic and industry collaborations. The work is highly translational and there is a clear path to moving to the clinic candidates based on this work. The applicant will have ample opportunity to design, conduct, and work with CROs to support in vivo IND enabling studies.

This **full-time in person bench science position will include project-specific and general lab responsibilities as outlined below:**
+ Operational leadership and organization of in vivo experiments across the lab.
+ Carry out in vivo experiments including tail vein injections
+ Analyze experimental data and interpret results.
+ Maintain detailed electronic notebook of all experiments.
+ Exercise judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
+ Generate data of a quality upon which decisions for the future direction of a program can be based.
+ Write reports and summaries of findings.
+ Participate in formal and information presentations.
+ Intellectual commitment to position by keeping up with appropriate literature and research publications.
+ Contribute to technical reports, the grant application process and manuscript preparation as required.

+ PhD or equivalent. Masters with substantial experience in in vivo experimentation and leadership will be considered

**Pay Transparency Statement**
The hiring range is based on market pay structures, with individual salaries determined by factors such as business needs, market conditions, internal equity, and based on the candidate's relevant experience, skills and qualifications.
For union positions, the pay range is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)
$92,400 - $104,300
