A Clinical Laboratory Scientist or technologist at this level develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates, and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results. Testing procedures are performed on a variety of biological specimens and/or environmental samples using manual or automated techniques and require a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision.
The work performed is In Cytogenetics and FISH testing. This position includes requirements to monitor quality control systems and measures; collaborate in the diagnosis and treatment of patients; and provide education for laboratory and other healthcare professionals.
SKILLS
Knowledge of professional cytogenetic and FISH principles, practices, concepts, and theories providing for sound independent work. This position is designed for individuals with laboratory knowledge and experience to learn and acquire unique skills to be applied in clinical diagnostics. The applicant must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or equivalent, prior laboratory experience. Experience as a cytogentics technologist working in a CLIA environment is a plus.
Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory quality control and assurance procedures and principles of performance improvement, providing for sound independent work.
Knowledge of laboratory equipment and ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation.
Ability to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results.
Ability to interpret and apply complex written instructions.
Ability to communicate (written and verbal), consult, and interact with other healthcare team members, external relations, customer service, and patient education.

Medical Microbiology Technologist Responsibilities Include:
Support the MRSN mission, collect MDROs and send them to the MRSN weekly, and respond to the inquiries from the MRSN leadership.
Participates in the development of research protocols and grant proposals and in the conduct of research related to MRSN activities.
Performs routine and specialized procedures, reviews, and approves clinical test results for use in the diagnosis and treatment of patients in accordance with established protocols for a laboratory performing high complexity procedures as defined by the standards of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988.
Perform microbiological examinations on a variety of specimens using morphological, cultural, and biochemical identification of microorganisms.
Able to process microbial identification/antibiotic susceptibility test on the most widely used automated systems: Microscan, Phoenix, Vitek 2XL, Bruker MALDI MS, or Vitek MS.
Have a basic knowledge and experience in the extraction of DNA from bacteria and in the construction of DNA sequencing libraries.
Performs Proficiency testing and continuing education to maintain licensure and remain updated on changes in the clinical laboratory field.
Ensures that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
Perform work that requires frequent standing, walking, lifting, grasping and repetitive motion.

Performs occasional duties on weekends/holidays if such duties are approved by the COR and the contractor's program manager.

Daily Responsibilities:
Using sophisticated laboratory equipment, these professionals look for bacteria, parasites and other microorganisms. They match blood for transfusions, analyze the chemical content of body fluids, and test for drug levels in the blood (to show how a patient is responding to treatment). They also count cells and look for abnormal cells in blood and body fluids. They use microscopes, cell counters, and other sophisticated laboratory equipment. Automated equipment and computerized analyzers fill the clinical laboratory area. The laboratory findings are then conveyed to the physician.
Medical Laboratory Technicians usually work under the supervision of the Medical Technologist, performing more basic tests and laboratory procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:
* Under general supervision, design, deliver, and assess instruction in Medical Laboratory Technology in terms of student-learning outcomes; develop and/or update course content and materials, and teaching and assessment strategies and methods to:
* improve student attainment of learning outcomes;
* address the learning needs of the college's diverse students;
* integrate thinking and writing skills into course content, as appropriate; and
* use technology to support instruction.
* Plan, organize, and independently carry out instructional and non-instructional assignments.
* Perform other teaching-related duties that include, but are not limited to, preparing course syllabi and maintaining office hours for academic advising and for conferring with students about coursework (one office hour per week per three-credit class).

Each individual performs only those high complexity tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individuals education, training or experience, and technical abilities. Each individual performing high complexity testing must follow the laboratorys procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results; maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens; adhere to the laboratorys quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed; Follow the laboratorys established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratorys established acceptable levels of performance; Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the supervisor; and document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratorys established performance specifications.If not qualified to perform testing independently, must perform high complexity testing only under the onsite direct supervision of a supervisor.

+ Advises providers and nursing service personnel of correct procedures for collection, handling and processing of specimens. Assists providers in determining appropriate laboratory services to be used for patient care.
+ Assists in training of technical students and/or new technologist employees.
+ Assists in development of technical procedures and in writing training procedures. Reviews and critiques new procedures developed by others.
+ Detects and repairs subtle instrument and/or reagent problems.

+ Bachelors degree in medical technology from accredited school OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.
License, Certification, Registration
+ Medical Technologist License (Hawaii) required at hire
