The Medical Technologist I performs routine and specialized moderate and high complexity laboratory tests on blood and body fluid specimens under minimal supervision. This role ensures accurate and reliable test results by adhering to quality control protocols and maintaining laboratory instruments. The Medical Technologist I supports patient care by completing tests efficiently, troubleshooting equipment, and assisting in data collection for regulatory compliance. This position may also include teaching new employees and students and performing phlebotomy duties as needed.
Essential Functions
Performs moderate and high complexity laboratory tests accurately and efficiently, ensuring timely reporting of results with appropriate documentation.
Adheres to quality control procedures by performing required checks, analyzing data, troubleshooting out-of-range results, and taking corrective actions as necessary.
Conducts daily, weekly, and monthly instrument function checks and preventative maintenance according to laboratory policies and procedures.
Troubleshoots instrument malfunctions, attempting corrective actions or notifying the appropriate personnel or manufacturer as needed.
Ensures all laboratory procedures comply with safety regulations, including the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to the Laboratory Safety Plan.
Communicates effectively with peers, supervisors, and other healthcare staff, providing timely updates on unusual patient results, instrument malfunctions, and quality control issues.
Assists with proficiency testing and data collection required for laboratory accreditation and regulatory compliance.
Collects chain-of-custody urine drug screens and performs phlebotomy duties as required to support patient care needs.
Collaborates with team members to ensure shift duties and department responsibilities are completed efficiently and accurately.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or, Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science required or
Passing score on the Clinical Laboratory Technology Proficiency examination approved by HHS (HEW) required

A Medical Technologist who excels in this role:
Verifies patient and specimen identification before performing any procedure.
Performs common testing procedures and assesses and reports test results.
Performs test result calculations as necessary.
Performs and reports waived to highly complex laboratory tests on patients by departmental policies and procedures.
Recognizes abnormal, unusual, or unexpected test results through correlation of data with common physiological conditions/age of the patient.

Perform routine procedures including tissue culture, harvesting, slide making and banding, automated karyotyping, reagent preparation, and FISH processing, probing, and scoping.
Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria
Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures
Monitor, operate and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality
Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving.
Prepare, test and evaluate new reagents or controls
Report accurate and timely test results in order to deliver quality patient care
Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures
Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary
Assist with processing of specimens when needed
Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Chemical or Biological science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or a non-traditional Bachelor's degree that meets local regulatory (CLIA & State) requirements
Minimum 1 year of clinical laboratory testing experience is required OR Bachelors in Cytogenetic/ MLS degree
Previous clinical laboratory testing experience in cytogenetic/FISH highly preferred
Certified by the National Credentialing Agency (NCA) in Cytogenetics (CLSp-CG) is a plus
ASCP or AMT certification is preferred
Ability to work independently and within a team environment
Proficient with computers; Familiarity with laboratory information systems is a plus
High level of attention detail along with strong communication and organizational skills
Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen

* Maintain sperm cryopreservation records and storage of cryopreserved sperm.
* Develop new techniques and implementing new procedures into the laboratory as clinically necessary, ensuring that all laboratory staff are trained and competent in the new procedures.
* Work such hours as may be required for the proper, effective, and timely performance of the andrology laboratory, including weekends, according to the operational needs of the department and in support of the smooth and efficient running of the service.
* Maintain quality control and assurance of the laboratory for COLA and CLIA compliance reviews.
* Be aware of clinical data outcomes and be able to discuss with the clinical care team and/or physicians.
* Ensure that the physical and environmental conditions of the laboratory are appropriate for the testing performed and provide a safe environment in which employees are protected from physical, chemical, and biological hazards.
* Coordinate Testicular Sperm Aspirations with outside physicians when required.
* Develop and maintain all weekend call schedules for the andrology team.
* Contribute to team effort by maintaining an excellent rapport and working relationship between lab team, other departments within practice and the Prelude network
* Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Knowledge and Skills:
* High school diploma or GED required.
* Bachelor's degree in medical or biological sciences strongly preferred.
* Andrology Laboratory Scientist (ALS) certification required for Tennessee.
* Meet state specific certifications/licensure requirements and Certified Lab Supervisor (CLS) is required.
* MT is required.
* Minimum of 5 years' experience in human IVF laboratory required.
* Successfully completed a minimum of thirty supervised procedures for new skills (30 of each type of procedure).

Primary Function
The incumbent performs testing procedures on various types of equipment. This person also documents testing process and reports results.
Responsibilities
* Review project instructions and prints to ascertain test specifications, procedures, objectives, test equipment, nature of technical problem and possible solution.
* Set up, assist and test units per diagrams and instructions to investigate design proposals for improving equipment performance or other factors and to obtain data for development, standardization and quality assurance.

Qualifications
* Associates Degree in related field with 2+ years of related experience. Bachelors Degree in Engineering or science related preferred.
* Demonstrate knowledge of how to use hand tools, power tools, and test equipment used in the area

* Ability to perform routine mathematical calculations and chemical analysis
* Ability to recognize normal and abnormal conditions of test systems and filters
