This Job performs all routine and complicated laboratory procedures including specimen processing and handling, testing of patient specimens, calculating, and reporting of results, performance of quality control procedures, operation and maintenance of instruments and equipment, assisting in the development of new procedures and protocols, may perform phlebotomy and other patient-oriented tasks, and may perform other related duties as requested or directed.
Responsibilities:

Performs all routine and complicated laboratory procedures in the primary section to which assigned about age or sex specific values.
Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation and equipment and makes minor repairs as necessary or notifies Bio-med as needed.
Must cross-train to other laboratory sections as needed.
Assures that the laboratory's quality control program is properly followed.
Calculates, enters, and/or verifies results of laboratory procedures.
Utilizes the Laboratory Information System.
Provides notification and documentation of critical laboratory values obtained.
Processes patient specimens, including collection, handling, and distribution always cognizant of minimal pediatric specimen volumes (when required).
Participates in the evaluation, development, and implementation of new or updated testing procedures and protocols.
Demonstrates competence to perform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the population-specific and developmental needs of patients served by the department.
Appropriately adapts assigned patient assessment, treatment, and/or care methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age specific and other developmental needs of each patient served.

Job Requirements:
Education/Skills
Bachelor's Degree or higher in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting the requirements defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489 (includes U.S. Military laboratory training courses of at least 50 weeks)
OR
Education that has been evaluated by an acceptable credentialing agency and deemed equivalent to a US Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology. xevrcyc
Experience
No experience required for graduates of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by NAACLS, or other organizations approved by HHS. OR
One year of approved clinical laboratory experience, which must include a clinical rotation through the following sections of the laboratory: Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last 5 years.
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

Your Everyday
Ensure specimens received by the laboratory are acceptable for testing by applying the appropriate criteria and change or prepare reagents, controls as necessary and records such in log. Label, accession and distribute specimens so that integrity of patient identification is maintained throughout processing and inoculate specimens from all areas of the body on appropriate media. Initiate orders for blood and/or blood components from the appropriate blood supplier. Follow hospital/laboratory safety and infection control policies and report variances to section supervisors as they occur. Determine appropriateness of manual methods, micro-methods, back-up procedures and initiate such procedures. Use computer system to compare patient results to previous results during the same encounter and investigate discrepancies and report test results within established departmental turn-around times after verifying documentation is complete and accurate. Prepare and interpret gram stains and other wet and dry preparations for bacteriology and parasitology. Perform all routine procedures including, but not limited to, ABORH typing and retesting, antibody detection and identification, compatibility testing and serology procedures. Prepare blood components while maintaining aseptic technique and proper storage. Evaluate serological reactivity to assist with antibody identification and crossmatch incompatibilities. Follow universal precautions at all times when dealing with blood or body fluids and disinfect counter tops at the end of the shift with appropriate cleaner. Operate, calibrate, conduct performance checks, and maintain any clinical laboratory instrument or equipment after orientation, troubleshoot basic instrument malfunctions, and document in the appropriate action log. Determine when an instrument's service representative should be contacted for assistance. Analyze quality control material for each procedure, record values according to section policy, and report to technical supervisor when results are outside established limits. Perform comparison studies of precision, accuracy and linearity on new or existing procedures, record proficiency surveys, and route form and reagent quality control as specified in the quality control manuals. Assist in the clinical orientation of new or less skilled laboratory personnel as requested by the section Supervisor. Assures proper packaging and disposal of waste chemicals. Maintain proper documentation (log) of generated waste. Perform order or result entry (manual or computerized) and reviews information for accuracy before verification. Document critical call value notification, duplicate checking, date and time of performance, technologist initials and expected age related “normal” values on all down-time reports as appropriate. Check instruments and benches assigned for appropriate reagent and supply levels and replenishes and notify appropriate person of low inventory items or of any out-of-date reagents contaminated or otherwise unacceptable, record receipt of supplies and reagents, properly initialing and dating the inventory items at receipt, time put into use and expiration, and ensure adequate inventory levels are available for incoming shifts. Receive tissue specimens from surgery, autopsy and the nursing floors, perform proper processing and preservation of tissue specimens, comply with proper specimen storage and preservation of all other non-tissue specimens for non-core laboratory. Prepare necessary reagents and collection supplies for assisting with bone marrow aspirations according to physician orders, assist physicians in the procurement of bone marrow specimens, perform special stains and follow protocols as appropriate.

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Medical Technologist) will be responsible for the processing, analysis, and reporting of diagnostic samples in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and regulatory guidelines in a contract laboratory setting. This position requires expertise in multiple diagnostic disciplines, including hematology, coagulation, chemistry, microbiology, flow cytometry, parasitology, and urinalysis. Key Responsibilities:

Job Summary and Qualifications
Consistently verifies patient identification, specimen tubes, and orders to prevent errors.

Support Services
Obtain basic knowledge of information systems and the laboratory. This may be through a vendor sponsored educational program if applicable.
Responsible for maintaining compliance with all federal, state, and professional regulatory agencies involving both information system functions and hospital policies and procedures.
Responsible for day to day management of the information systems including the clinical, billing and personal computer systems for all job related functions.
Responsible for orientation of all new lab employees for information systems, compliance, and performance improvement.
Serves as a CAP inspection team member.
Ensures all aspects of the labs compliance program is implemented, monitored, and maintained on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
Oversees the complete ancillary testing process throughout the hospital. Encompasses but not limited to orientation, training, proficiency, quality control review, compliance to policies, and day to day activities involving point of care or near patient testing.
Coordinates performance improvement programs for the laboratory and ensures all documentation is present for this process. Reviews data for trends and works closely with all staff and leadership on improvement opportunities.
Serves as liaison for all outreach accounts including market facilities.
Blood Bank
As a technologist working in the Blood Bank department, you are additionally responsible for the following duties/tasks:
Strives to reduce outdating and wastage of blood products through good inventory control practices.
Use good problem solving skills and judgment dealing with antibody situations.
Show diligence in following up on blood stored in surgery or Rhogam.
Demonstrate knowledge of the indications for transfusion and follow appropriate action before release of products that do not meet criteria.
Demonstrate knowledge of the Quality Systems in place for good blood bank practices.
Chemistry and Hematology
As a technologist working in the Chemistry or Hematology departments, you are additionally responsible for the following duties/tasks:
Meet the needs for instrument rotations, but flexible to adapt to the needs of other rotations and coworkers.
Maintains competency and actively involved in blood gas collection and analysis for Chemistry rotations.
Maintains competency and actively involved in assisting with bone marrow aspirations and processing of slides for Hematology rotations.
Microbiology
As a technologist working in the Microbiology department, you are responsible for the following additional duties:
Demonstrates knowledge regarding routine collection, inoculation and processing of all specimen types.
Consistently prepares and promptly interprets stains and smears in accordance with departmental procedures.
Effectively utilize job knowledge in determining the differentiation of microorganisms on culture plates and confirmation testing associated with each.
Demonstrate knowledge of what organisms should be considered significant and consistently verify the accuracy of test results.
Process the Microscan Cultures and Exceptions log completely.
Weekend Supervisor/ Lead
As a week-end supervisor, you are additionally responsible for the oversight of the following tasks:
Scheduling and productivity monitoring
Organizing workflow.
Employee/physician issues.
Departmental Supervisor
As a departmental technical supervisor, you are additionally responsible for the oversight of the following tasks as applicable to your area:
Ensures departmental policies and procedures are established and reviewed on appropriate time line.
Works with Laboratory director in establishing new methods of testing as appropriate.
Reviews quality control on daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Ensures all corrective action is appropriate and documented. Works with staff on deviations and troubleshooting.
Ensures appropriate proficiency surveys are ordered for testing menu, surveys are rotated among all shifts and all personnel, and appropriate corrective action is taken and documented on all variances.
Ensures competency of all employees within department is performed on al timely basis and documented.
Responsible for organizing workflow of scheduled personnel for optimal productivity.
Works with Laboratory Administrative Director in established budget for designated area and adhering to this throughout the year.
Ensuring employee evaluations are performed on appropriate time intervals with documentation and remediation when applicable.

As an Assistant Director, you are responsible for the departmental supervisor duties of your area as well as assisting the Director in day to day activities. In the absence of the director, the oversight of the Laboratory is delegated to this position.

As an Administrative Director, you are responsible for the oversight of the entire Laboratory in ensuring:
Integrating the departments services into the organizations primary functions.

Education, Skills, and Experience:

Performs blood and body fluid testing and does cultures for diagnostic and research procedures. This is primarily, complete blood counts (CBC's), clinical chemistries, and bacterial cultures. Does work in a Biosafety Level 2 and Level 3 facility. Works with a broad range of pathogens implicated in human and animal disease, as well as emerging diseases, some of which may be select agents.
Correlates and interprets data based on knowledge of techniques, principles and instruments. GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The Medical Technologist or Technician ensures that all necessary steps are taken to provide that the quality of work performed is within the guidelines of clinical variance and acceptability.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Specimen processing, test performance, and reporting tests results
Ensure that laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results are followed. Demonstrate a complete understanding of established policies and procedures as outlined in the procedure manual.
Recognize any questionable patient results and repeat and or verify before being released. Notify the supervisor of any unresolved problems.
Correct all errors immediately upon discovery.
Ensure that STATS and critical values are called and turned out as soon as completed to the appropriate personnel and document and initial all action taken in the computer.
Notes concerning unsatisfactory specimens, specimens obtained incorrectly, abnormal appearance, or condition of specimen must be documented in the computer. Notify the proper personnel to obtain another specimen when needed.
Ensure patient testing has the highest priority over other section functions
All proficiency-testing samples must be handled in the same manner as patient testing.
Laboratory quality control policies must be followed. Investigate any unsatisfactory results and correct prior to releasing patient reports. Notify supervisor of any unsolved problems.
Laboratory policies and procedures must be followed whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
Perform preventive maintenance on all instruments according to established procedures, ensuring that all maintenance and repairs are documented.
Identify problems that may adversely affect the performance or reporting of test results.
Document all corrective action and notify supervisor.
Ensure that incomplete projects from the previous day are followed through and communicated to the testing personnel in the department that day.
Ensure the handling and loading of reagents and supplies is in accordance with established procedures for each test and instrument and that no supplies or reagents that are outdated are used unless manufactures statement is in place confirming acceptable performance.
Rotate supplies and reagents so that earlier expiration dates are used first. Notify supervisor if supplies or reagents are getting low.
Upon receipt of supplies/reagents date and store properly, record in supply book documenting date received, lot #, and expiration date where applicable.
Assist others when possible
Keep technical and job knowledge skills up to date.
Be familiar with all procedures in the safety manual and ensure that all procedures are followed according to lab policy.
Immediately report any recognizable safety problem to the lab supervisor or manager.
Promptly complete and submit an incident report form to the lab manager when any incident occurs involving an employee or patient.
Ensure work areas are kept clean and spills are contained and cleaned immediately.
Responsible for learning requirements for insurance contracts.
