Performs high complexity medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

5. *Maintains competency and proficiency on all laboratory instrumentation and procedures; performs and documents preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment, troubleshooting problems as necessary. Notifies immediate supervisory personnel of equipment/instrument issues and calls Service regarding issues.
6. *Communicates with coworkers, clients and leadership by transmitting patient cart testing and results, appropriate ideas, information and opinions clearly, concisely and courteously; maintains employee, patient, client and corporate confidentiality.
7. *Performs general housekeeping tasks to maintain safe work environment; maintains adequate supplies in the work area.
8. *Assists in training new employees, students, other technical staff and support staff.
9. *Works collaboratively with all laboratory staff to ensure completion of testing and communication of necessary information to assist testing completion.
10. Uses quality improvement processes, programs or outcomes to help improve department operations; assists with LEAN projects.
11. Performs service excellence must-haves to achieve an excellent patient/customer experience.
12. Basic knowledge in phlebotomy and phlebotomy procedures and ability to perform phlebotomy if required by laboratory facility.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related laboratory science from a two-year accredited college or CLIA- approved Military MLT program required or has earned a bachelors degree in a chemical, physical or biological science meeting American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) criteria for MLT certification.
OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:
ASCP certification as an MLT (ASCP) or equivalency preferred.

POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for a high level of technical knowledge and application of that knowledge to department testing, clinical relevance, and complex problem-solving skills. This position serves as a department resource and is responsible for assisting with department compliance with all pertinent laboratory accrediting agency and regulatory requirements (e.g., CLIA '88, JCAHO, CAP, OSHA). May be responsible for the collection, receipt, and processing of biological specimens into the laboratory.
Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Performs testing in an accurate and timely manner according to established policies and performance standards with a knowledge level determined for that testing. Responsible for startup, calibration and accuracy of procedures and instrumentation. Actively participates in problem solving activities within the department, using advanced level of decision-making skills. Demonstrates advanced knowledge and application of all computer systems used in the department. Demonstrates advanced knowledge and application of theory and clinical relevance testing. Assists in ensuring compliance with accrediting agencies and regulatory requirements. Demonstrates ability to assume lead responsibility in absence of on-site departmental leadership personnel.
2. Recognizes, ensures validity, and assists in monitoring abnormal patient and/or QC results of testing. Ensures accuracy of test results. Participates in detecting and documenting occurrences that deviate from defined procedures. Recognizes need and participates in department and LSA/SQL System process improvement and quality assurance activities, including assisting with monitoring of department indicators of productivity and quality.
3. Monitors and controls inventory and assists in providing financial data for the department. Active participation on process improvements in financial performance to decrease costs, improve productivity and improve service.
4. Participates in contributions to additional department/System projects. Active in training of department employees. Actively participates on at least one committee or team or is involved in at least one special project identified with department management. Exhibits awareness of medical/legal consequences of professional actions. May assist in new employee orientation, training and competency. Provides input for competency and annual assessments for employees in appropriate time frames. Completes training module for newly hired/transferred personnel. Note: Unless the employee meets the minimum qualifications defined by CAP for a technical consultant, the employee may not oversee competency assessment.
5. Acts as a department resource by participating in providing educational information to internal and external customers. Demonstrated advanced level of effective verbal and written communication skills. Attendance and participation at staff meetings. Demonstrates preceptor and coaching skills and promotes a constructive environment that encourages learning and development.
6. May process and/or prepare patient samples as required to include the following: 1) specimen collection 2) general laboratory specimen processing and 3) referral laboratory processing. In doing so, ensuring correct patient and specimen identification and specimen integrity.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science/medical technology, OR
Bachelor's degree in chemical or biological science (transcripts may be reviewed to determine eligibility) AND certification (MLS or categorical).
Foreign educated candidates must provide a detailed credential evaluation from IERF (International Education Research Foundation) or other nationally recognized credentialing agency for review to determine eligibility.
For certain specialty disciplines ONLY (Toxicology, HLA, HCTT, etc.) where no certification is available from a certifying agency, a bachelor's degree with one year of experience in that discipline is required.
Demonstrated competency in phlebotomy in departments where applicable.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Responsible for supervising/performing the full range of emergency and routine procedures in the areas of microbiology, hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, chemistry and blood bank.

Basic Requirement for Clinical Laboratory Scientist:
A. A Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from a regionally accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics, AND successful completion of a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
OR
B. At least a full 4-year course of study that included 12 months in a college or hospital-based medical technology program or medical technology school approved by a recognized accrediting organization. The professional medical technology curriculum may have consisted of a 1-year post- bachelor's certificate program or the last 1 or 2 years of a 4-year program of study culminating in a bachelor's in medical technology.
OR
C. A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from an accredited college/university that included 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry), one semester (one quarter) of mathematics, AND five years of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, microbiology, Immunology and Urinalysis/Body Fluids. This combination of education and experience must have provided knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of medical technology equivalent to that provided by the full 4-year course of study described in A or B above. All science and mathematics courses must have been acceptable for credit toward meeting the requirements for a science major at an accredited college or university. Acceptable experience is responsible professional or technician experience in a hospital laboratory, health agency, industrial medical laboratory, or pharmaceutical house; or teaching, test development, or medical research program experience that provided an understanding of the methods and techniques applied in performing professional clinical laboratory work. Certification/licensure as a medical technologist (generalist) obtained through written examination by a nationally recognized credentialing agency or State licensing body is a good indication that the quality of experience is acceptable.
Evaluation of Education and Experience: The four major areas of clinical laboratory science are microbiology, clinical chemistry, hematology, and immunohematology (blood banking). Qualifying course work in these areas includes bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, tissue culture, virology, parasitology, endocrinology, enzymology, toxicology, urinalysis, coagulation, hemostasis, cell morphology, immunology, serology, immunoserology, immuno-deficiency, hemolysis, histocompatibility, cyto-genetics, and similar disciplines or areas of laboratory practice.
Related fields include physiology, anatomy, molecular biology, cell biology, embryology, pathology, genetics, pharmacology, histology, cytology, nuclear medicine, epidemiology, biostatistics, infection control, physics, statistics, and similar areas of science where the work is directly related to the position to be filled.
Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0644 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing various assays in a clinical laboratory and calibrating or maintaining clinical laboratory instruments. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). Experience or graduate education must have been in (1) the general field of medical technology; (2) one of the disciplines or specialized areas of medical technology; or (3) a field directly related and applicable to medical technology or the position to be filled.

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: medical technology, chemistry, biology, or education that is directly related to the position (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) Experience or graduate education must have been in (1) the general field of medical technology; (2) one of the disciplines or specialized areas of medical technology; or (3) a field directly related and applicable to medical technology or the position to be filled.???????

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. A day in the life…
As a Lab Tech you will be working directly with your Quality Assurance team members to ensure that only the finest product is shipped to our consumers. You will be conducting quality inspections, resolving quality issues, investigating root causes, directing and training team members, and following proper procedure for all documentation. You will also learn the job function of all quality team members so that you may relieve them during breaks or while on vacation or sick leave. Inventory management, audit prep, and general leadership are some of the other key functions.
What you will be doing….
* Understanding of weights and measurements including metric conversions.
* Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
* Verify that process specifications, from raw material to packaged goods, are maintained at acceptable levels.
* Maintain a high level of awareness regarding sanitation standards and conditions.
* Collaborates with employees and management from all areas of the plant to ensure compliance with RSC guidelines, rules, and procedures.
* Adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to ensure product quality and maintain compliance with food safety standards.
* Complete and follow FSQA training and programs to comply with regulatory requirements, ensure consumer safety, and support the plant's food safety and quality objectives.
* Promptly report and take appropriate action on any observed or potential food safety hazards, process deviations, or non-conformities by notifying the designated plant supervisor, in accordance with your role and responsibilities.
* Actively contributes to the continuous improvement of the company's Food Safety Culture through engagement and actions aligned with your role.
* Follow batching instructions and product formulas with accuracy and precision.
* Measure, weigh, and dispense raw materials and ingredients according to standard operating procedures (SOPs).
* Document all batch activities, including lot numbers, weights, and times, on appropriate forms or in digital systems.
* Perform pre-op checks, equipment calibration, and verification activities before batching begins.
* Coordinate with QA and Production teams to ensure timely delivery of batches to production lines.
* Take product samples as required and deliver them to the quality lab for testing.
* Identify and report deviations or out-of-spec materials immediately to QA or Supervisory staff.
* Maintain cleanliness of batching equipment and work area in compliance with GMP and sanitation guidelines.
* Handle and store raw materials and ingredients properly to avoid contamination or spoilage.
* Support inventory rotation (FIFO) and assist with material reconciliation.
* Adhere to all plant safety policies, food safety regulations, and company procedures.

A TYPICAL SCHEDULE FOR THIS ROLE IS 10 HR SHIFTS MONDAY - THURSDAY. START AND END TIMES WILL VARY WITH THE EARLIEST START BEING 3:45PM AND THE LATEST END TIME BEING 2:15AM. DURING PEAK SEASON, OVERTIME MAY BE REQUIRED.

* High School Diploma or GED.
* Excellent communication skills and the ability to speak, read, and write English fluently, with or without an accommodation.
* Basic math skills.
* Computer skills, including MS Office.
* Able to multi-task, prioritize and be detail oriented.
* Experience with organizing batch set ups.
* Self-motivated and teamwork orientated.
* Able to prioritize daily schedules.
* Able to read formulas, order raw materials, do monthly inventory.
* Must be able to differentiate between colors and changes in colors.

* Experience in food service or food manufacturing.
