Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Knowledge of billing/coding for lab procedures • Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and fingerstick to patients. • Collect appropriate laboratory specimens according to the testing ordered. • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, observing isolation procedures. • Verifies test requisitions by comparing the information with nursing station log, bringing discrepancies to the attention of clinical personnel. • Verifies patient by reading patient identification. • Collects therapeutic drug-monitoring assays by collaborating with lab personnel to ensure appropriate drug dose to collection time. • Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed. • Can appropriately document using the LIS system all specimens collected and appropriately order the testing according to the requisition from the ordering physician. • Recognizes system failures, and inconsistent or erroneous patients results, and reports these along with unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, MAS, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; maintaining unresolved orders. • Handles the quality control material appropriately and responds to out of range results in an appropriate manner. • Enhances the phlebotomy department's reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments. • Organizes work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling; sorting specimens; checking labeling; logging specimens; arranging reports for delivery; keeping work surfaces clean and orderly • Document corrective actions associated with QC, QA, instrument and proficiency testing. • Knows and uses proper reporting systems (including panic results).
