Department College of Medicine, Institute for Pediatric Rare Diseases Responsibilities * This position plays a key developmental and leadership role in the processing, analysis, and quality control of clinical genomic tests that support IPRD's mission to improve diagnosis and treatment for children with rare diseases across Florida. The incumbent will define the goals of the Sunshine Genetics Newborn Screening program and develop new protocols for the whole genome sequencing diagnostic test. The incumbent will also serve as the point of contact and compliance coordinator for the Newborn Screening Program. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Laboratory Director and Technical Supervisor and will contribute to daily lab operations, including nucleic acid extraction, library preparation, sequencing, and data tracking as part of high-complexity clinical testing in a CLIA-certified laboratory with a focus on next-generation sequencing (NGS), and molecular diagnostics.
* Develops and implements testing techniques for the Newborn Screening Program. Performs pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical procedures for next generation sequencing including PCR testing and validation. Prepares, labels, and processes biological specimens with accuracy and attention to detail. Accurately documents and interprets results.
* Follows all standard operating procedures and safety protocols. Participates in quality control and quality assurance activities to ensure result reliability. Monitors reagent and supply inventory; performs routine maintenance and calibration of equipment. Troubleshoots instruments and assay problems and documents the issue and resolution.
* Stays updated with the latest advancements in genomic technologies and methodologies to enhance laboratory practices. Identifies and reports instrument malfunctions or test discrepancies to the supervisor promptly. Assists in validation and verification studies for new assays or equipment. Stays informed on advancements in molecular diagnostics and participates in ongoing training.
* Serves as point of contact and compliance coordinator for the Newborn Screening Program with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), who oversee the federal standards outlined in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
