Grand River Health clinical phlebotomist job description

This is a full-time position, 36-40 hours per week with no evening or weekend requirements. Grand River Medical Group's west end lab is typically open from 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Join us as we open our NEW lab on the west end of town!

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Perform venipunctures and obtain urine specimens; requires use of color vision. Monitor the identification, processing, transportation of specimens to ensure specimen integrity.
  • Perform therapeutic phlebotomies. Instruct patients in collection of 24-hour urine specimen.
  • Verify patient information (name, date of birth, address) and insurance information from the practice management system.
  • Review lab orders, encounters and documents in the electronic medical record.
  • Assist patient before, during and after specimen collection.
  • Answer the telephone, take messages and provide routine laboratory information.

Education/Experience/Skills:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Minimum one-year related experience and/or training preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

We welcome you to join the Lab/Xray team as a Phlebotomist . In this role, you will perform a variety of laboratory and diagnostic procedures; to include collection of blood specimens from clinic patients, processing of patient samples, same day testing on specimens obtained from clinic patients for the purpose to provide information for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The Phlebotomist-Lab Assistant is expected to support the mission, vision, and values of Olathe Health Physicians.
Minimum Requirements:


+ High School or GED Minimum


+ Other: Attended Phlebotomy Course and Completed Clinical or Attended Medical Assistant Course or Training Preferred


+ Any Job Related Experience Preferred


+ Safety Blood Collection Equipment (Preferred proficiency)


Key Responsibilities:


+ Reviews Phlebotomy procedures and guidelines annually or when unsure of procedure and does not deviate from them. Understands priority levels, STAT, RT and ADD.


+ Properly identifies and prepares patient for sample collection. Performs veni-puncture and micro-sampling on patients of all age groups. Obtains and receives correct specimens: to include following order of draw therefore ensuring proper specimens are collected for required testing and performs any special specimen handling. Conforms to OSHA and OHSI safety standards relating to safe blood collection techniques.


+ Efficiently and accurately monitors Specimen Collection Inquiry list for performing ADD test orders, canceling orders, crediting duplicate test requests, and logging in specimens once obtained. Understands and is competent in the use of OHSI and reference lab computer system(s).


+ Routinely monitors and maintains adequate supplies necessary to ensure appropriate functioning of the laboratory. Maintains cleanliness of the laboratory, drawing rooms, and carts. Maintains laboratory equipment ensuring proper calibration and Preventive Maintenance is performed as scheduled.

Phlebotomist II is responsible and accountable for performing a wide range of tasks to provide a specimen of highest analytical quality for testing and accurate information for the system and medical laboratories' clients. Phlebotomist II can independently perform venipunctures and skin punctures on all age groups, from neonates through adults. As a phlebotomist, you'll support Geisinger's mission of providing exceptional patient care through innovative, efficient, and high-quality laboratory services. At Geisinger, our phlebotomists are the friendly faces that collect samples to be analyzed by our state-of-the-art labs. Supporting a varied patient population, you'll be responsible for venipunctures/skin punctures on patients in our inpatient setting.

There are many other tasks our phlebotomists complete, such as troubleshooting physician orders, processing specimens for testing, as well as aiding our patients.

We have many different skill levels in our labs, from new to experienced phlebotomists, and all skill levels are well utilized. Geisinger employs phlebotomists in roles I, II, and III. We also have numerous staff members who pursue their ASCP certification and become trainers for our department!

Phlebotomist I, II and III qualifications will be considered at appropriate compensation. Salary commensurate with experience. Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA) or similar will be considered! Military experience will be considered. US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman, US Air Force Combat Medic.
