Introduction This is a professional clinical work providing crisis-oriented clinical services, including on-scene assessments of adults, juveniles, veterans, indigent individuals, etc., to assess their current issues and treatment needs while deescalating the situation.
Nature Of Work
An employee in this class is a member of a co-responder team consisting of a behavioral health clinician and a sworn officer of the Tampa Police Department (TPD). Most of the time will be spent with law enforcement as a partner, responding alongside the police officer to the scene for calls involving behavioral health disturbances. This position will focus on individuals identified as high utilizers of crisis stabilization units, emergency rooms, and calls for police service related to behavioral health issues. Under general direction, employees exercise considerable initiative and independent judgment in selecting work methods/techniques and formulating recommendations to deescalating the situation while continuing assessment and determining potential treatment needs. Work is reviewed through conferences, oral and written reports, and observation of results obtained.
Examples of Duties
Accepts and takes the lead on specific Behavioral Health calls for services; Serve as Subject Matter Expert (S.M.E.) related to issues of mental health and substance abuse disorders and treatment needs.
Identify needs and recommend services to individuals identified as high utilizers of crisis stabilization units, emergency rooms, and calls for police service related to behavioral health issues.
Consults with law enforcement officers to determine appropriate dispositions for services, arrests, diversion from arrests, diversion from unnecessary emergency department visits, or some combination of criminal justice/behavioral health treatment involvement.
File Baker Acts and Marchman Acts, as deemed clinically appropriate.
Link and refer individuals in need of crisis, mental health or substance abuse services to the proper resources and/or community outreach programs. Maintain contact with those on caseload providing a comprehensive continuum of services to promote wellness and recovery.
Maintain contact with care coordinators and community providers to follow up on linkage to services and service outcomes.
Attends multidisciplinary treatment team meetings.
Record and report all grant-needed data for TPD and other involved entities.
Assists in the review and development of clinical policies, procedures, and guidelines for the provision of services to assure compliance with all levels of regulations.
Must be able to participate in training related to crisis intervention, weapon education, and response call simulation.
Perform related work as required or assigned.

The Counseling Center is a critical component of Student Success at the University of South Florida, located in beautiful Tampa Bay on Florida's spectacular west coast.
The Counseling Center strives to support the mental health and well-being of the 44,000 enrolled graduate and undergraduate students at the USF Tampa campus. Through the provision of high quality clinical services and evidenced-based practice, innovative outreach, consultation, and education, the Counseling Center is recognized and valued for its contribution to the success of an exceptionally diverse student body. The Counseling Center, with a dedicated, energetic, and motivated team of 30 multidisciplinary professionals including licensed psychologists, licensed mental health counselors, licensed clinicalsocialworkers, licensed marriage and family therapists, and administrative support personnel is accredited by IACS and has an APA-accredited doctoral internship and APPIC affiliated post-doctoral fellowships.
The Counseling Center is committed to a team approach to client care across all staff. With a thriving group therapy program, interdisciplinary training programs, embedded clinicians, and ongoing consultation opportunities, the Counseling Center is seeking psychologists with a commitment to excellence, culturally responsive care, and who would enhance the diversity and resources of our staff.
Psychologists directly serve the USF community through the ethical practice of culturally responsive, theoretically grounded, and evidenced-based individual and group therapies, crisis intervention, and mental health consultation and prevention activities. Additionally, this position has the opportunity to be highly involved in providing training and supervision for the Center's training programs. Psychologists establish designated liaisons with strategic campus partners consistent with their training and expertise, may serve as coordinators of specific program areas, and conduct program evaluation/research. Psychologists participate in the development of Center policy and programs and represent the Center to the USF community and at local, state, and national professional forums. Considered essential staff, this position is responsive to the mental health needs of students during and following critical events such as severe weather incidents or campus emergencies.
Special Skills or Training: Psychologists are expected to be knowledgeable of culturally responsive approaches to mental health treatment, and skilled in treating common presenting concerns of college-age students including anxiety, depression, substance misuse, eating disorders, and interpersonal trauma, with evidenced-based interventions.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Candidates must possess an earned doctorate in applied health sciences (e.g., clinical psychology, counseling psychology, marriage and family therapy) from an accredited program which includes an accredited internship (or equivalent as determined by the Florida Board of Psychology) in professional psychology. Licensure or license-eligible in the State of Florida. Date by which licensure is expected will be determined as part of the hiring process. Candidates must be proficient with the use of an electronic medical record, and comfortable using technology such as Microsoft Word to complete work-related tasks.
• An accredited internship (or equivalent as determined by the Florida Board of Psychology) is required.
• Licensure or license eligibility in the State of Florida is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience working with a college student population.
-Experience providing short-term individual and group psychotherapy, using theoretically grounded approaches and evidenced-based therapies.
-Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
-Clinical experience with culturally diverse groups including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, international, and differently-abled students, and a desire to grow in providing culturally responsive care.
-Experience and comfort working with students presenting with high risk difficulties including suicidal ideation, self-injurious behaviors, eating disorders, substance abuse, PTSD, and/or trauma.
