The Crisis Counselor I provides clinical services to individuals in the community, crisis stabilization in the crisis care center, home, and community through mobile services. Assists in development of program and treatment protocols for the crisis stabilization program. Manages acute distress, rapid assessment, and provide effective communication and coordination of services among multiple systems. Provides professional clinical assessments and diagnosis of individuals displaying acute signs and symptoms of psychological distress. Formulates, writes, and implements clinical and diagnostic plans related to the needs of the individual. Coordinates appropriate services and interventions in order to stabilize the individual in the least restrictive manner. Works as part of a team to assure services and resources are coordinated among providers as needed to help individuals served live and function optimally in the community. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Provide crisis stabilization in the crisis care center, home, and community through mobile services, and short-term crisis counseling interventions to meet the needs of individuals and/or families in the community. Includes the provision of professional face-to-face and/or telephone crisis stabilization services for individuals (and concerned others) experiencing acute distress and psychiatric, substance abuse, or intellectual disorders. As appropriate works as part of the crisis services team to provide appropriate direct and client related services including crisis services. Demonstrate sound clinical judgment and strong risk assessment skills.
Assist individuals with crisis resolution and general problem-solving. Develop effective and measurable individualized service plans for crisis stabilization plans as quickly as possible from onset of crisis, to avert hospitalization. Monitor the plan to ensure all needed services are provided as stated in plan, and change plan as needed.
Assist clients in maintaining stability following discharge from the program by providing short-term crisis stabilization and case management services to clients until the client has established services in other agency programs or in the community.
Respond in a timely manner to individuals receiving services, families, and representatives of multiple systems by providing and gathering necessary information, as appropriate. Interact with individuals and community partners in a manner that supports collaboration. Promote positive communication and collaboration among team members and other community resources needed to provide quality services. Serve on designated teams, committees and work groups.
Demonstrate sound clinical judgement in evaluations and follow through. Staff cases as appropriate. Provide staffing consultation to others as requested. Maintain a good working relationship with both internal and external referral sources and provide community education or training as needed.
Meet productivity standards for services provided. Document all required elements in the electronic health record (EHR) at the conclusion of the crisis situation. Complete all reports in a timely manner. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Behavior Specialist provides proactive behavior management strategies for teachers who are responsible for students experiencing behavioral challenges. The Behavior Specialist works in collaboration with the classroom teacher and school administrative staff. Additionally, the Behavior Specialist coordinates with other school division staff and private providers to ensure that coordinated services are provided to the student. Responsible for implementing programs to remediate behavior and social challenges for general and special education students ages 3-21. The Behavior Specialist provides consultation to teachers regarding understanding and managing challenging behavior in the classroom, thus supporting the academic program. Provides leadership and expertise at the elementary, middle, and high school levels for school-based staff, and serves as a team member in collecting and analyzing behavioral data. The Behavior Specialist reports to the Director of Special Education.
ESSENTIAL TASKS

Provides support and demonstration of the following skills: training, modeling, coaching, and instructional guidance in the area of classroom management to support the educational program.
Communicates openly and effectively with students, parents, community patrons, staff, and administration as a positive representative of Roanoke City Public Schools.
Directs the preparation and maintenance of educational reports.
Evaluates and monitors students' behavioral functions and progress, and assists in the development of appropriate goals and objectives.
Coordinates and participates in department meetings to ensure that a high quality of services is provided within the system.
Monitors and updates program equipment, classrooms, and labs.
Conducts and maintains inventory
Monitors assessments and utilizes strong organizational skills.
Attends and plans trainings seminars, classes, and study groups to support the alternative and/or diagnostic programs.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Works independently and is available on an "as- needed" basis to establish general objectives; independent judgment is required. Requires regular contact to discuss issues of moderate importance; requires continuing contact with officials at higher levels. Demonstrates knowledge of varied behavior management/support strategies. Has the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master's Degree or higher leadership experience and previous work experience in a therapeutic milieu for emotionally challenged children and/or adolescents required and 3 to 5 years classroom teaching experience (highly qualified), preferably in the area of Special Education.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Typically sitting at a desk or table; moderate walking. Must have a vehicle to travel throughout assigned division. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Primarily controlled temperature and clean office environment.
