Clyde's Restaurant Group company history timeline

1963

On August 12, 1963, investment banker Stuart C. Davidson opened Clyde's of Georgetown.

1968

Although he never graduated from the university, in 1968 Laytham became the restaurant's general manager.

1970

In 1970, the former boarding house stand-around bar, Old Ebbitt Grill, stood one city block away from the White House.

For the first time since 1970, Clyde's returned to Washington, DC and located their next restaurant directly in the middle of the rejuvenated Penn Quarter and Chinatown's colorful Friendship Gate on 7th Street.

In 1970, Davidson asked Laytham to join him as a partner in Clyde's (giving him 20 percent of the ownership).

1975

Clyde's of Columbia, Maryland opened in 1975 and became a fixture of its community.

1976

The 1976 hit song "Afternoon Delight" by Starland Vocal Band was inspired by the spicy happy hour menu at Clyde's of Georgetown.

1985

In December 1985, Clyde's Restaurant Group purchased from founder Richard J. McCooey three notable D.C. drinking and dining establishments: The Tombs, 1789 Restaurant, and F. Scott's.

1987

In 1987, Davidson and Laytham's next transformation would be internal.

2001

Clyde's founder Stuart Davidson died on August 1, 2001.

2002

When Tower Oaks Lodge in Rockville, Maryland opened in 2002, yet another Clyde's habitat was on display, this time overlooking a 21-acre nature preserve and built inside a 200-year-old, two-story timber barn from Vermont.

2006

Only a year later and thirty miles northwest of Georgetown, Clyde's would open Willow Creek Farm in Broadlands, Virginia in 2006.

2012

According to Laytham in 2012, the company was opening a new location "Every few years".

2017

The Tysons Corner location closed on February 5, 2017, to make way for development of the Tysons Central residential and commercial building project.

2019

Clyde's co-owner and CEO John Laytham died on January 3, 2019.

In July 2019, Clyde's Restaurant Group was acquired by Graham Holdings.

2020

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Soundry shut down in March of 2020.
