1983: Clayton Homes goes public.
Clayton Homes opened its first manufactured-home community in Texas in 1987.
Sales reached $371 million by 1992 and kept climbing.
By February 1995, the homes being manufactured at Clayton's 14 factories had many of the charms and amenities of a site-built home, including cathedral ceilings, fireplaces, walk-in closets, and whirlpool tubs.
In 1998, Clayton added nine retail centers in Kentucky and Tennessee to its network, purchasing them from Loving Homes, Inc.
In October 2000, after 54 consecutive quarters of record earnings, Clayton Homes reported an 18 percent decline in earnings, marking the onset of another industry-wide downturn.
No sooner had this goal been reached than the company announced its intention to double its business again by 2002.
