  • Technical Co-Founder in Residence (Process Engineer), Methane Abatement

    Deep Science Ventures

    Co-Founder Job In Washington, DC

Join as a Founder in Residence in Climate We're on the lookout for entrepreneurial individuals with technical and commercial domain expertise with keen interest in founding, and building a global scale, impact driven, high growth company from ground up. We are seeking applications from experienced industry, startup and/or new science or engineering based technology development professionals from anywhere in the world to work with us on a novel technology that uses microbes to convert methane emissions into valuable products such as protein, biofertilizer, and bioplastics.. You'll work closely with the DSV team and the current Founder in Residence for this area to co-found and spin-out a new company. Once the new venture is incorporated with pre-seed investment from DSV, you and your co-founders will own the majority stake in the business and continue receiving support from the DSV team post-spinout. The role is full-time, remote initially until venture incorporation and spin-out - anticipating offices and lab space based on the East Coast of the United States. The Opportunity Atmospheric methane is responsible for >30% of the warming we are experiencing today, and levels are rising rapidly. Our company will turn the tide of methane emissions, decreasing peak temperatures in the process. We do this by targeting methane streams originating from methanogenic bacteria and deriving value from them, instead of letting them escape to ever-increasingly accelerate climate change. Our Approach We are targeting the “long tail” of methane emissions from biogas streams that are too small for conventional uses, such as renewable natural gas, but still have enough energy from which to derive substantial value. We are developing a small scale, modular, and robust bioreactor that can be readily deployed in multiple settings. The bioreactor itself will contain a microbial consortium that converts methane from biogas flows into high-value products. This will enable us to target methane emissions that currently have no economically viable solution, and to build a scalable and successful enterprise. We are looking for a technically-minded co-founder who will: Lead development of a bioreactor system that uses biogas and microbial consortia to produce valuable outputs; Work closely with a microbiologist to align bioreactor features with target growth conditions; Serve as an enthusiastic contributing leader across multiple facets of venture building including customer development, team building, securing investment, and strategic positioning. Requirements Who Should Apply Most suitable candidates will likely multiple of the following criteria: PhD or equivalent industry R&D know-how focused on bioprocess engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field specifically with designing and scaling bioreactor systems for microbial cultivation, particularly for gas-fed systems like methane; In-depth knowledge of current approaches and state-of-the-art (SOTA) technologies, and constraints in one or more of the following areas: the requirements for cultivating methanotrophic bacteria, algae, or other microbes under different conditions (aerobic/anaerobic, batch/continuous); gas-liquid mass transfer, bubble dynamics, mixing, and agitation to ensure optimal contact between methane and microbial cultures; sensors, controllers, and automated systems for monitoring and regulating temperature, pH, dissolved gases, and other critical parameters in real-time; various fermentation types (batch, fed-batch, continuous) and their impact on microbial growth and productivity; optimizing fermentation conditions for yield, quality, and consistency of the end product (protein, plastics, or fertilizer); Industry-specific know-how and commercial knowledge (e.g. forming strategic partnerships, manufacturing, procurement, etc.) Experience in building and scaling new technologies from concept to demonstration in one or more of the following areas: Simplifying complex systems to make them more robust and reliable, while minimizing performance losses; designing and fabricating custom bioreactors, from lab-scale prototypes to pilot-scale systems, using various materials (e.g., stainless steel, glass, polymers); designing bioreactors for microbial or algal systems, particularly for methane or gas-utilizing processes; integrating pumps, gas supply lines, aeration/mixing systems, and nutrient delivery modules, ensuring a seamless and efficient bioreactor system; using computer-aided design (CAD) tools and other software for creating detailed bioreactor schematics; prototyping, assembling, and testing new bioreactor designs, iterating based on experimental data; understanding of materials compatibility, particularly for handling gases like methane or corrosive compounds in fermentation; Experience in raising funds from early stage investors/VC; Experience in working in a leadership role, applying project management and collaborative skills with colleagues across different teams; Exceptional command of English, with proficiency in additional languages considered a plus; Flexibility and willingness to eventually work in-person in a major metropolitan area on the East Coast of the United States. Benefits Our Offer By joining DSV, you will be part of a team of operators who have founded companies and led the translation of science at some of the most respected universities, charities, funds, and government agencies. Here's what we offer: Access to optimised, purpose-built, proprietary tools, resources, and processes to help create high-impact ventures from scratch; Opportunity area-specific know-how from our network of Partners and Advisors; Up to £250k in investment to incorporate the new venture and develop early proof-of-concept data; Guaranteed income of £4,166 per month paid as a consultancy fee until the company is launched and the pre-seed investment is secured; Majority equity stake in the new company for you and your co-founders; Continuous post-spinout support, including fundraising, commercial partnerships, recruitment, and team-building; Collaborative support from dozens of Founders currently at DSV across sectors. About DSV Deep Science Ventures (DSV) is on a mission to create a future in which both humans and the planet can thrive. We use our unique venture creation process to create, spin-out, and invest in science companies, combining available scientific knowledge and founder-type scientists into high-impact ventures. Operating in four sectors-Pharmaceuticals, Climate, Agriculture, and Computation-we tackle the challenges defining these areas by taking a first principles approach and partnering with leading institutions.

Many companies are already aware of the , which stands for environmental, social, and governance-three pillars that are used to assess the sustainability of institutions. As such, many of them have been making strides in their own ESG efforts. A number of them have also been shouting out about these initiatives to the public. These are questions that Manminder Kaur, the founder of a homegrown PR agency , posed. And to answer them, publi CT.io has actually developed a tool known called . ADVERTISEMENT ****Leveraging data**** Launched on July 10, ESGNewslytics.AI is a proprietary news analytics platform that aims to do three things: measure, analyse, and amplify. But specifically, it aims to do this for news coverage that relates to ESG topics. “When we started this journey, we never leveraged on analytics, it was just about getting companies to share their stories, and putting them across all media sites,” Manminder said about publi CT.io. Image Credit: PubliCT.io Backed by Cradle Fund with Malaysia Digital (MD) status from MDEC, the startup allows brands to choose news sites and pay only for successful placements. Powered by **AI and machine learning capabilities**, the platform is a response to the demand for specialised ESG communication tools. It offers **ESG keyword analyses** as well **as comparative company analyses** so companies can truly understand how they stack up in the broader context. Essentially, companies can see how many of their ESG stories are picked up by the media, and how many people are talking about the brand. From there, a word cloud is also generated to show what ESG keywords are getting the highest noise, and whichever ones may be lacking. There's also a **sector-wide ESG analysis** to enable companies to examine ESG trends and news coverage within business sectors. Manminder shared that the platform currently analyses across 12 keywords, which includes phrases like carbon footprint, sustainability, governance, anti-corruption, and more. ADVERTISEMENT ****Crafting new narratives**** That's where the AI-powered ESG content generator comes to play. ESGNewslytics.AI features a tool that leverages data so companies can generate narratives that really extract the full value of their ESG efforts. These narratives are supposed to be impactful and can be sent out to the company's target audience. Specifically, the platform will identify the least mentioned ESG keywords in the news for the brand, and then generate strategic content recommendations. It will pitch story ideas as well as the news site that may be most relevant to that story. “You don't have to scratch your head anymore thinking about what story to tell,” Manminder said. Image Credit: PubliCT.io Well, Manminder said that ESGNewslytics.AI actually prevents . “For example, an oil and gas company can use the data to see what is being mentioned about the brand across 12 main ESG keywords,” she explained. “The highest mentions could be sustainability, followed by carbon footprint, and the lowest is governance, anti-corruption, etc. The AI will suggest stories for the last two.” She said, “The purpose is not to have the same narratives out again and again, but to build data-driven narratives, which companies normally don't do.” Image Credit: PubliCT.io ADVERTISEMENT ****Why storytelling matters**** Well, a showed that 89% of Singapore business leaders say media reporting influences their corporate ESG strategy decision-making. And 91% of those surveyed said that it was important to be seen by external parties as “socially responsible”. These results show the close relationship between public perception and corporate policy frameworks on ESG issues, and how Singapore's C-suite leaders are influenced in their management of ESG implementation. That means, the more impactful and resonant the narrative is, the more ESG initiatives will take place. Image Credit: Vulcan Post ESGNewslytics.AI ultimately wants to enable companies to create better ESG strategies through its solutions. Its analytics will offer companies critical insights to re-evaluate and improve their ESG strategies. “With the introduction of ESGNewslytics.AI and our existing platform for guaranteed media coverage, publi CT.io, we have come full circle in providing end-to-end PR solutions, with the aim of ultimately positioning us as a PR powerhouse in the region,” Manminder said. She continued, “This dual-platform approach ensures that our clients are not only equipped with the latest AI-driven insights into ESG-related news trends but also benefit from guaranteed media coverage to effectively communicate their narratives.” * **Learn more about ESGNewslytics.AI .** * **Read other articles we've written about Malaysian startups .** *Featured Image Credit: Vulcan Post*

  • Technical Co-Founder in Residence (Microbiology), Methane Abatement

    Deep Science Ventures

    Co-Founder Job In Washington, DC

We're on the lookout for entrepreneurial individuals with technical and commercial domain expertise with keen interest in co-founding, and building a global scale, impact driven, high growth company from ground up. We are seeking applications from experienced industry, startup and/or new science or engineering based technology development professionals from anywhere in the world to work with us on a novel technology that uses microbes to convert methane emissions into valuable products such as protein, biofertilizer, and bioplastics. We are developing small scale, modular, and robust bioreactors that can be readily deployed in multiple settings. The bioreactors will contain a microbial consortium that converts methane from biogas flows into high-value products. This will enable us to target methane emissions that currently have no economically viable solution, and to build a scalable and successful enterprise. We are looking for a technically-minded co-founder who will: Lead development of microbial consortia and optimize their composition and growth conditions to maximize output of valuable products; Contribute to the design and refinement of novel bioreactor designs; Serve as an enthusiastic contributing leader across multiple facets of venture building including customer development, team building, securing investment, and strategic positioning. Requirements Who Should Apply Most suitable candidates will likely exhibit multiple of the following criteria: PhD or equivalent industry R&D know-how focused on cultivating and optimizing the productivity of co-cultures of microbes, specifically methanotrophic bacteria and algae; An engineering mindset focused on maximizing the climate impact of our technology as quickly and as broadly as possible; In-depth knowledge of current approaches and state-of-the-art (SOTA) technologies, and constraints in at least one of the following areas: aerobic methane oxidation, uses of microbial co-cultures to produce products such as protein, innovative fermentation system and process design, post-harvest processing, and production and extraction of bioactive compounds, and/or creating circular bio-economies; Industry-specific know-how and commercial knowledge (e.g. forming strategic partnerships, agricultural value chains, manufacturing, procurement, etc.) especially with experience tailoring the characteristics of microbial products for client needs; Experience in building and scaling new technologies from concept to demonstration, including commercial delivery of an innovative engineering, industrial, or hardware technology venture with broad understanding of technical product development and R&D commercialization; Experience in raising funds from early stage investors/VC; Experience in working in a leadership role, applying project management and collaborative skills with colleagues across different teams; Exceptional command of English, with proficiency in additional languages considered a plus; Flexibility and willingness to eventually work in-person in a major metropolitan area on the East Coast of the United States.
