Coastal Carolina University company history timeline

1954

On the evening of July 23, 1954, a group of citizens met in the Horry County Memorial Library to discuss a daring proposal – the creation of a local college.

20, 1954, when Coastal Carolina Junior College opened as a branch of the College of Charleston.

1958

After the College of Charleston contract expired in 1958, Coastal became an independent community college supported by Horry County.

1959

The college's first five graduates are awarded associate's degrees on May 27, 1959.Back to Top ↑

The Horry County Educational Commission was created in 1959 to oversee the college's county tax money.

1960

The Horry County Higher Education Commission is responsible for a contract that establishes Coastal Carolina Regional Campus of the University of South Carolina, effective fall 1960.

The site of the present-day campus, by now known as USC Coastal Carolina College, was chosen in 1960, on a plot of land between United States 501 and S.C. 544, on land owned by Burroughs Timber Company and International Paper.

1963

Coastal baseball plays its first season in 1963.

The campus' first building, later named the Edward M. Singleton Building, opened in 1963.

1974

USC Coastal Carolina College adds a junior year; in 1974, a fourth year is added.

1975

In 1975 Coastal Carolina awarded its first bachelor’s degree.

1987

The first residence halls (currently "The Woods" residence halls) opened in 1987.

1991

The 1991 men's basketball team becomes the first Coastal athletic program to reach an NCAA championship.

By 1991, enrollment had grown to over 4,000 students, leading the Coastal Educational Foundation and Horry County Educational Commission to seek independent status for the school.

1992

The trustees adopt President Palms' recommendation in June 1992.

1993

The South Carolina Legislature passes legislation establishing Coastal Carolina University as an independent, public institution, effective July 1, 1993.

The University’s first Board of Trustees meets for the first time July 1, 1993.

On July 1, 1993, the school officially became an autonomous state institution under the name Coastal Carolina University, in a bill signed into law by South Carolina Governor Carroll Campbell on the steps of the Singleton Building.

Coastal Carolina University begins offering its first graduate programs in education in Fall 1993.

The University endowment tops $12 million, reflecting a more than 300 percent increase since 1993; the total number of donors increases by 17 percent in one year.

2003

The first class of recruits for the new football team begins practice in preparation for intercollegiate play in Fall 2003.

2004

In 2004, Coastal Carolina University celebrated its 50th anniversary; the same year, enrollment reached 7,000 students, and CCU opened the first phase of the University Place housing complex across S.C. 544.

2006

The long-awaited MBA degree gains approval, and the Wall College of Business begins accepting MBA students for Fall 2006.

The University continues record growth with 8,049 students from 44 states and 32 foreign countries enrolled in Fall 2006.

2007

David A. DeCenzo takes office as the second president of Coastal Carolina University on May 7, 2007.

2008

For the first time, a Coastal Carolina University faculty member is named the Governor's 2008 Professor of the Year.

2016

The largest fundraising campaign in the institution's history – I’M IN – The Endowment Campaign for Coastal Carolina University – is launched in April 2016.

In 2016, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers athletic programs officially joined the Sun Belt Conference.

2020

In October 2020, Coastal Carolina University announced the appointment of Michael T. Benson as its next president.

2021

Benson began his tenure on January 1, 2021.

2022

The College of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a tenure-track position beginning August 2022 as Assistant Professor of American Civil Rights and Social Justice History.
