If you work with friends then it is the best thing in the world and customer interactions and interactions with other employees are always pleasant.
Top management does not give a damn about anyone below them. Best example is they send out an end of year letter to all of their employees that goes on and on about how productive their year was and how many achievements they've mad like opening new stores etc. Then at the end of the year they thank the employee with twenty dollars worth of reward points. In 2022 coborns did 1.4 billion in revenue. 20 dollars, which won't be used by everyone, barely anyone in fact, is nothing compared to what they could send the employees if they really cared. Other jobs offer coborns tuition payment. Coborns doesn't, they will only offer cdl training if you dedicate your life to driving for them. The pay is crap, but in small towns its the best job you can get to work with friends because they block all other grocers and retailers from coming in because the store managers or other middle managers are often in the city council working for them. They can't hear any form of criticism with out verbally berating any employee who speaks up. They ban any form of fun on the job despite how much they claim that its a fun work environment. Its only fun if stocking shelves is fun for you amd the "fun" they want you to have is from that. No congregating is allowed, and God forbid anyone talk about anything non-work related while on the clock. On top of that, they undercut the employees on pay. No bonuses, less than a dollar raises. Managers of departments are making less than 20 an hour. Furthe on top of that, they try to suck more money out of their employees by selling them an online merchant shop. An employee exclusive shop filled with coborns branded products, that, oh yeah, aren't allowed to be worn on the job. Coborns is a disgrace to employee management and are downright disrespectful to their employees. Yeah, no wonder they make so much, it comes from what the employees are owed while the scrooge mcduck top managers rely on the words of yes men middle management. It's corrupt, you have to agree with everything coborns in order to get promoted beyond department manager.
The employee discount has improved, it used to be 10% on a select few brands, and when they needed a revenue boost they would discontinue products that were discounted. Even with a discount, the same products at Walmart are still cheaper compared to coborns prices tho. Now it's 10% off everything.

Loosen regulations on what is banned, let.employees maybe have water with them, heck be able to wear a Santa hat this time of year or even wear the coborns merchandise they offer to employees. Nowadays it just feels like every source of fun at the job is being taken away as soon as they realize it.
Just winged it. I'd done interviews before. They'll hire anyone. You literally have to be a rapist to not get hired and there have been employees who have even checked that box.
Dollars lower, people who are just starting make more than people who have been there years.
Men and women, all white. Granted this is the mid west, but it's very rare for a poc to get promoted or hired to management.
Talking woth other employees and customers.
