Doctor Ruth Patrick, a famous botanist who received her bachelor's degree from Coker College in 1929.
In 1937 she began to consolidate the academy’s diatom collection, augmenting it by collecting species in the field and by acquiring species from other sources.
She began her tenure as a researcher but became the associate curator of microscopy in 1939.
In 1947 she founded the academy’s limnology department.
Her work has been widely published, and she has received numerous awards for her scientific achievements, including the National Medal of Science in 1996.
In January 2008, students began using the 40,000 sq ft (3,700 m) state-of-the-art Charles W. and Joan S. Coker Library-Information Technology Center.
In 2008, he was the inaugural recipient of the Alice C. Cole Class of 42 Fellowship in Studio Arts at Wellesley College.
The Princeton Review selected Coker College a "Best Southeastern College" in its 2011 rankings based on academic excellence and student satisfaction; this is Coker's seventh consecutive selection to this honor.
Effective July 1, 2019, Coker College adopted the name Coker University.
