**The Medical Director Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (MDACP) provides professional medical knowledge and experience to give the “clinical voice” in the implementation of COLA's policy. The position requires a proactive approach to the development and implementation of COLA policy in a continuously evolving healthcare environment, with a constant and steady focus on quality laboratory medicine and patient safety.**
**Essential Functions**
* Provide consultation on professional and clinical issues relating to physicians and other allied healthcare professionals in a team related orientation.
The following activities provide examples of this responsibility:
* Assist in the development of accreditation criteria that addresses the variety of issues facing healthcare professionals in providing quality laboratory medicine and patient care;
* Assist in the development of educational offerings relevant to the current laboratory industry needs
* Evaluate outcomes of COLA's Accreditation process including the Staff Technical Accreditation Team (STAT) process, the Denial process, and the Appeals processes
In this capacity, the **MDACP** will:
* Assure that STAT team decisions are consistent with COLA's mission, vision, policy, philosophy, organizational culture and are appropriate to the nature of the infraction;
* Assess individual cases for potential risk of harm to patients or laboratory staff;
* Assess individual cases for COLA's exposure to risks of potential liability, risk to deeming authority, and legal responsibility
Interact with physician colleagues/customers to include:
* Explanation of necessary corrective actions;
* Investigating substantiated complaints
* Remain competent in the field of laboratory medicine to perform accreditation surveys, including participation in required proficiency testing for GYN Cytology
* Serve as the team leader for diagnostic rescreening events for GYN Cytology. Communicate and discuss discrepant results with the Laboratory Director while on-site.
* Write the final results letter following diagnostic rescreening events, describing any necessary next steps and corrective actions.
* Provide guidance and support to other departments as needed in areas of substantive knowledge
For example: Assisting in product and service development by expressing the needs of medical practitioners and verifying that new or redesigned products and services meet those needs

* Marketing & Communications Department
* Write, present, and edit from clinical perspective COLA education materials; to include:
* Subject matter (columns) for the COLA Insights newsletter, blogs, vlogs, videos

* As appropriate, act as an advocate for COLA and opportunities to promote COLA consistent with COLA's mission and activities
* Participate in person at COLA's Board of Directors meetings; provide routine reports to the Board as directed
* Participate virtually in applicable monthly committee meetings as requested by CEO

* Codes incoming document forms as needed

+ Ensure proper licenses, permits and registrations for all rolling stock are completed timely and properly.
+ Maintain equipment yards and garage locations in a safe and first-class condition and properly dispose and document disposal of all hazardous materials.
+ Manage, recruit, and develop a highly skilled technician workforce.
+ Approve invoices, payroll, and charges to the equipment shop.
+ Actively promote safety in the repair and operation of equipment and the transport operation of the equipment.
+ Assign work to technicians.

Perform routine surveys, resurveys, interim, and complaint surveys in accordance with division policies and procedures
Examine the records and practices of COLA laboratories for compliance with COLA standards. Verify that records and practices are consistent with the information provided to COLA by the laboratory.
Document an objective evaluation of each laboratory on the laptop computer and transmit this information to headquarters within five business days of completing the survey
Demonstrate accurate and consistent interpretation of COLA standards
Demonstrate effective time management while conducting a thorough survey, with a minimal negative impact on the daily operation of the laboratory
Distinguish between laboratories that will achieve accreditation via the routine Survey Report and Cover Letter/PRI (Plan of Required Improvement) process from those that will require additional oversight and/or assistance to achieve compliance with COLA standards
Notify the Technical Support Specialist and Surveys Team Leader of laboratories that need additional oversight and/or assistance outside of the normal PRI process to achieve compliance with COLA Standards
Provide specific recommendations for consideration by the STAT committee including documentation needed to verify correction of critical deficiencies for laboratories that need additional oversight or assistance to achieve compliance with COLA standards

COLA - Legal Address - Columbia, MD **COLA has 2 positions available:** Wisconsin/Illinois Pittsburgh, PA Additionally, experience in Histology technical processes and/or frozen section management is a plus The Surveyor conducts an educational, non-threatening, cost-effective survey of COLA laboratories to evaluate that the high standards necessary for quality patient care and COLA Accreditation are met.
**Essential Functions**
* Represent COLA in a professional and consistent manner, dressing and acting accordingly
* Maintain a positive attitude in all interactions with customers (external and internal)
* Maintain awareness of current COLA policies, philosophies, products and activities to provide quality service and support to all customers (external and internal)
* Maintain awareness of current technological and regulatory developments pertinent to COLA participants
* Cooperate with staff of other regulatory agencies when conducting simultaneous surveys
* Represent COLA by participating in seminars, conferences, and volunteering to do speaking engagements
* Take every opportunity to speak with laboratories, clinicians, and technologists regarding the benefits of COLA accreditation
* Maintain contact with headquarters via telephone and/or electronic communication for efficient exchange of information. Check email and voice mail daily for messages.
* Complete expense reports, on a timely basis. Submit expense reports to Surveys Team Leader for approval.
* Schedule laboratories for survey and book travel considering economy and efficiency. All travel requests must be submitted electronically according to established timeframes.
* Contact lab prior to survey to minimize cancellations. Document all correspondence with lab in the LinQ account.
* Obtain any additional forms or reference materials needed based on the survey location
* Perform routine surveys, resurveys, interim, and complaint surveys in accordance with division policies and procedures
* Examine the records and practices of COLA laboratories for compliance with COLA standards. Verify that records and practices are consistent with the information provided to COLA by the laboratory.
* Document an objective evaluation of each laboratory on the laptop computer and transmit this information to headquarters within five business days of completing the survey
* Demonstrate accurate and consistent interpretation of COLA standards
* Demonstrate effective time management while conducting a thorough survey, with a minimal negative impact on the daily operation of the laboratory
* Distinguish between laboratories that will achieve accreditation via the routine Survey Report and Cover Letter/PRI (Plan of Required Improvement) process from those that will require additional oversight and/or assistance to achieve compliance with COLA standards
* Notify the Technical Support Specialist and Surveys Team Leader of laboratories that need additional oversight and/or assistance outside of the normal PRI process to achieve compliance with COLA Standards
* Provide specific recommendations for consideration by the STAT committee including documentation needed to verify correction of critical deficiencies for laboratories that need additional oversight or assistance to achieve compliance with COLA standards
* Identify Risk of Harm situations, contact the Surveyors Team Leader to discuss situation while in the laboratory. Collect documentation to support ROH (Risk of Harm) allegation. Transmit survey results and documentation to HQ ASAP (no later than 24 hours).
* Provide guidance to all COLA participating laboratories through recommendations and educational support tailored to the individual laboratory being surveye
* Demonstrate effective communication skills for sharing technical and non-technical information with COLA laboratories and COLA staff
* Communicate with the Surveys Team Leader and/or Technical Personnel for problems and questions as they arise
* Attend and participate in scheduled meetings (monthly technical training, weekly conference calls, and COLA Cares)
* Document all communication with COLA laboratories promptly and accurately in the LinQ Contact History Log
* Provide field training for new surveyors and additional assistance if requested for new surveyor orientation
* Assist to ease the stress of new surveyors by sharing knowledge and experiences
* Mentor new surveyors regarding job function, COLA, and Division policies and philosophy
* Prepare presentations about COLA or current laboratory issues or technologies. Act as a presenter for COLA staff training, COLA sponsored speaking engagements, conferences, and/or workshops.
* Review survey feedback from Surveys Team leader to improve completeness, accuracy, and consistency of survey files. If questions arise or feedback is unclear, contact Surveys Team Leader to discuss.
* Actively participate in improving COLA's accreditation process by making suggestions for improvement
* Participate in the technical review of COLA materials or assist in the development of new COLA materials and programs
* Maintain awareness of specific state issues and regulations
* Assist COLA to stay current with new developments in your region
* Communicate with Senior Operations Manager (SOM) for complaint/interim/resurvey assignments. Schedule monthly tours prior to the date specified by the SOM.
* Notify SOM of any cancellations or scheduling issues
**Work Environment/Telework Options**
This position is conducted virtually. Employees are specifically hired for a geographic area and must notify COLA if they are considering moving.
**Travel Expectations:** This position is a traveling position. Employees should expect to be on the road the majority of the year. as they will be surveying COLA laboratories throughout the US.
**Required Education and Experience**
* Six years experience as a Laboratory Technologist
* Experience as a laboratory generalist (to be able to inspect all types of laboratories conducting testing in any specialties COLA accredits)
* Ability and willingness to travel extensively
* Bachelors degree in Laboratory Science plus 6 years clinical laboratory experience OR
* Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technologist by ASCP plus 6 years clinical laboratory experience, OR
* Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by ASCP, HEW or AMT plus 10 years clinical laboratory experience
* NOTE: To be eligible to be hired for the state of **California** candidates MUST have a Bachelors degree in Medical Technology
* *Preferred:* Experience acting as a liaison between physicians and other health professions
* *Preferred:* Experience providing educational and training activities
* *Preferred:* Previous experience in the operation and instrumentation of a POL
* *Preferred:* Experience preparing for or conducting on-site inspections of clinical laboratories

****Day in the Life****
Our Snow Plow Operators are an integral member of our winter maintenance team. You will safely operate a combo plow unit, performing snow removal on local roads and highways as per the contract requirements. When you are not on the road, it will be important to maintain accurate documentation such as fuel reports, safety reports and hours of service as well as maintain and clean the equipment, conducting routine maintenance and minor repairs. You will familiarize yourself to understand route maps and sand/salt application rates and meet call in requirements during winter storm events.
