Cole Haan company history timeline

1928

Cole Haan was founded in 1928 in Chicago with the intention of becoming a premium outlet for men’s footwear.

1975

In 1975, the two founders sold to a group of partners headed by George Denney.

1979

In 1979, Cole Haan entered the women’s footwear arena, having set the stage for their wildly successful men’s footwear lines.

1996

The company introduced a collection of driving shoes targeted at European customers in 1996; this style had long been one of Cole Haan's bestsellers on the Continent, but the relaunch made the line more fashion forward, with new colors, longer-lasting materials, and softer leathers.

1998

Starting in 1998, several Nike executives began moving to the Cole Haan unit to help revitalize the brand.

1999

2000

In 2000, Cole Haan introduced an online store, which changed the way their customers could experience shopping for all of their favorite Cole Haan shoes and accessories, making a shopping experience possible twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, with their website.

Upon launch, Cole Haan executives explained that they expected this new line to ultimately account for 15 percent of the division's volume, which stood at $200 million in 2000.

2012

Nike sold Cole Haan to Apax Partners in 2012 for $570 million and moved its headquarters to Greenland, New Hamshire.

2013

2013 when it was acquired by Apax Partners, a private-equity firm, from Nike Inc. in a $570 million cash deal.
