Coleman Health Services company history timeline

1978

Founded in 1978 in Portage County as a nonprofit community behavioral health agency, Coleman was named for Father Kevin Coleman, a man driven by both his faith and advocacy for mental health.

1984

1984: Coleman merges with Portage Area Senior Service (PASS). Coleman Adult Day Services provides a medical model of affordable daytime care for adults whose lives are challenged.

1985

In 1985, a new CEO took control.

1987

1987: In order to offer immediate assistance around-the-clock, 24-hour crisis service is established, providing adult and youth intervention services on a walk-in or telephone basis.

It was designed to provide permanent placement for those individuals that were mentally disabled and homeless. It received on average 1,000 calls or visits per month, up 121% as compared to 1987 numbers.The Kevin Coleman Foundation was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to raising private funds to support the mission of The Kevin Coleman Mental Health Center.

1994

Coleman reduced the total number of days Portage County residents stayed in state psychiatric hospitals by more than 21% since 1994.

2003

2003: Coleman Consultation Services is formed to assist other organizations with housing and residential development, as well as grant writing, billing administration and strategic planning.

2004

2004: New facilities for Coleman’s Adult Day Services and Behavioral Health are built in Ravenna.

2005

2005: Coleman expands to Stark County providing a full range of behavioral health, employment and housing services.

2006

2006: Coleman expands to Trumbull County and nearly doubles the number of individuals, families and businesses served.

2011

2011: Coleman expands once again to the counties of Allen, Auglaize and Hardin.

2015

2015: Coleman extends into Jefferson County and begins serving clients with mental health counseling, psychiatry, case management, crisis intervention, residential, and employment services.

2017

2017: Coleman moves into Mahoning County through its acquisition of Turning Point Counseling Services.
