City of College Park company history timeline

1945

The first election was held the first Monday of July, 1945.

When the various sections of this area were considering the incorporation of the entire area into the City of College Park in 1945 the residents of Berwyn Heights decided to retain their own incorporation and not join the other sections in forming the new town.

College Park incorporated as a town in 1945 and today is a thriving city with nearly 30,000 residents.

1946

Burch resigned and John Haggerty, Jr., was assigned to the office in April, 1946.

In November 1946, the Greenbelt Volunteer Rescue Squad was organized by Dick Bates, Robert Gray and Warner Steinley.

1946 Beardall Street was changed to Edgewater Court.

1948

Another local organization to secure a home at this time was the Greenbelt National Guard unit organized in January 1948.

1952

Title was transferred on December 30, 1952, when GVHC president Michael Salzman handed PHA Commissioner John Taylor Egan certified checks for the required 10 per cent down payment.

1952 A year of tremendous growth for College Park.

1953

Frank J. Lastner (former chairman and present member of the Board of County Commissioners of Prince Georges County) was Mayor in 1953, succeeded by Thomas J. Canning in December that year.

Some of these apartment buildings were sold to the Greenbelt Development Corp. in 1953, and the following year the remaining undeveloped acreage west of Edmonston Road and east of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway was sold at open competitive bids to private individuals.

1954

Finally, in 1954, the last piece of government-owned property was sold, involving the commercial center, which completed the Federal Government's complete withdrawal from ownership of the Greenbelt lands and properties.

1955

In 1955, the fire department was converted into a Volunteer Organization and was admitted to membership in the Prince Georges County Fireman's Association and the Maryland State Firemen's Association and also the State Rescue Squad Association.

1957

1957 The College Park National Bank undertook a $100,000 remodeling job, installing four new drive-in windows and anew safety vaults.

1958

1958 Gabriel's Sub Shop opened next to Edgewater High School, and is still family owned and operates at the same location.

William A. Duvall was a stalwart worker in this church. It has continued to grow over the years and in 1958 the congregation decided to build a new modern church building at Hollywood Road and Rhode Island Avenue in the Hollywood Subdivision.

1959

The Municipal Building for the City of College Park was built and dedicated in 1959, at the corner of Yale Avenue and Knox Road.

The U. S. Agricultural Research Center adjoins Greenbelt on the north and the Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA), located on the east, was established in 1959, being the first major United States laboratory devoted" to investigative and experimental peaceful exploration of space.

1961

1961 On February 17, 1961 the College Park branch of the First Federal Savings & Loan Association was officially opened.

1963

He held this position until 1963, when he declined to run again for the office.

1964

A new modern Municipal Building has recently been built and was dedicated September 6, 1964.

1965

1965 The entire scope of Orlando changed on March 8, 1965 when Governor Haydon Burns dedicated the Interstate-4 strip between Colonial Drive north to Highway 436, on top the Ivanhoe Exchange.

1969

1969 In April of 1969 the city council passed an ordinance designating the marshy peninsula on Lake Ivanhoe near the intersection of Columbo Circle and Ivanhoe Blvd. as a wild life sanctuary.

1973

1973 On March 1, 1973, The First National Bank at Orlando changed its name to Sun Bank.

1987

1987 College Park Neighborhood Association formed.

1988

The University of Maryland System was created in 1988 when a merger formed the current 11-campus system.

1997

Renamed the University System of Maryland in 1997, it is an academic and research institute with land-grant and sea-grant status.

1998

The College Park Aviation Museum, opened in 1998, offers fascinating exhibits about the history of flight to educate today’s flying aficionados both young and old.
